This place is amazing. The art on display done mostly by local amateurs is just superb. There is so much to see. Area located in what was a shopping mall so room for lots of rooms with various artists displaying their work and always friendly and wanting to talk with you. Beautiful area outside with sculptures. Its so worth a visit you'll find something you'll enjoy.
I was seriously impressed by the art in Amarillo! Almost all of the artists were there! I highly recommend it! There are snacks and wine available at no cost. We will go back!
We just don't realize how many outstanding artists there are in Amarillo until we see them all in one place. And that place is the Galleries at Sunset Center. The back story is that Sunset Center was Amarillo's first indoor mall, built in the early 1960s. Since the 1990s, its owner had failed to make anything viable out of the tired and dated structure, but when he passed away, his widow had different ideas. Ann Crouch, a gifted artist herself, fixed the place up and transformed the old mall into what is now probably the largest collection of art galleries in any mid-sized city in Texas. She rents the spaces cheap, and the artists respond, showcasing everything from the classical to the quirky. Painting, photography, sculpture, mixed media, you name it-- it's there. The First Friday Artwalk goes from 6 to 9pm on the first Friday of each month, where you and a couple thousand others can tour the galleries, talk to the artists face-to-face, and enjoy live music on every corner. It's totally casual, it's diverse, and it's free. The Sunset Galleries are also also home to the Amarillo Art Center, a cavernous space where students young and old can take classes, and the Creative Arts Performance Space, offering theater, dance and fitness classes.
The first Friday of every month is the art walk. Tons of people, food and drink. Almost all the galleries are open with displays. The rest of the time their hours are not consistent and can be hit or miss whether they are open.
This location and building is unique to Amarillo. Their First Friday Art Walk is always fun. You get to cruise around the studios and talk with the artists. There is definitely something for everyone; photography, landscapes, pottery, sculpture, mixed-media etc. Often vendors have free wine and munchies out. It is a great way to spend an evening in Amarillo. Highly recommended. For more to see and do in the texas panhandle, visit my blog: http://kineticheart.wordpress.com/

Most of the shop have snacks and drink to enjoy while you look around. In all it is a pleasant atmosphere, relaxing and a nice way to spend a Friday evening.
Who knew Amarillo, Texas would have so many amazing artists? These galleries have something for everyone and very reasonable prices for professional quality fine art. There is a lovely sculpture garden on the east side of the building. I was impressed by how many artists have galleries here. They also have a variety of art classes available at the Amarillo Art Institute. This is Amarillo's best kept secret!
