I really enjoyed the display and how easy it was to navigate throughout. Take your time and really pay attention to the little details. The whole display tells a a great story. It draws you into the wild west and makes you feel like you were there. Caution to those with strollers: It is not easy to get up the steps and it is not easy to navigate around. Also, for you book hounds that love historical stories, you will find a small selection of hard to find books here.

We only called in for a beer as the travel book said we needed to take a shifty. Well it certainly takes one back to what it must have been like back in those days of the "wild west". Worth wandering in a looking at the main rooms plus the photos in some of the corridors. Owner/?manager saw us doing this and came and chatted, surpassed to see a couple of Brits soaking up the history. Again a decent micro-brewery beer (the US has started to learn what proper beer tastes like; wish they'd do the same fro a cuppa). So don't pass it by.

On out last excursion to Wyoming (Oct 2014), we drove further north from Cheyenne than usual and stopped in Buffalo at the Occidental Hotel. This is more than just an old hotel; it is more of a functional museum, and worth at least a "stop by" to soak up a bit of the Old West feel of Wyoming. We arrived a little after noon on a Saturday, went directly to the Bar. We were a little surprised to find we had the place almost to ourselves. Except for the addition of a few modern trappings, you really can get the feeling that you've stepped back into an 1880's or 90's saloon. The physical bar itself is amazing, from the dark oak (or whatever) wood work, the brass foot-rails and appointments, the Tiffany-looking cut glass decorations and the big mirror. The bar is well stocked (all of the usual liquors and many of the "newer" labels -- Knob Creek, Jack Daniels Honey, etc were represented). The "saloon keeper" was very friendly, a local who had a more-than-fair knowledge of the Hotel & Town's history as well as the local attractions. The restaurant, bar and hotel are all connected on the ground floor via a maze of small rooms and hallways -- it was kind-fo fun to do a little exploring. Definitely worth a visit if you are anywhere near the Buffalo area.If you plan to eat lunch or dinner at the Restaurant, you definitely want to call ahead. A wake was being held in an ante-room of the Bar on the day we were there, and jus happened to be open when we arrived. The Bar and Restaurant do have special hours during the week and weekends. These hours may "flex" some seasonally, too (I'm not sure about that, but I do know many places adjust their regular hours accordingly).

The Occidental is definitely worth a short visit. Much of, we were told, looks like it did in the 1880s. Certainly it was full of character in all the public rooms we were allowed to look through and this was added to by the numerous historical photos on the walls. While the hotel lobby was charming, the bar (the 'saloon') was even more authentic and we ended our short tour with a drink at the bar surrounded by the heads of numerous animals. The barkeep told us that the saloon was exactly as it was when opened and it certainly seemed to be a step back in time. The Occidental is definitely worth half an hour of your time if your passing through Buffalo.

There is a McDonald but lets face it we wanted to eat in the landmark in town. The hotel is very old and has a restaurant which is super expensive. Friends of our told us to eat at the bar. We sat at a table and had buffalo burgers which were cooked perfectly with french fries. No complains.

Our server (sorry I forgot her name) gave us great ideas of where to see in the mountains. Thanks. The food was great. Hats off to the Chef. The service was great. Enjoyed the atmosphere also.

We loved everything about this hotel. Don't forget to see the clothing collection on the second floor

Unbelievable, how much of the original 1880 ambience this hotel still holds. Plan your trip so that you are there for the Thursday night jam session where local and visiting musicians from 7 -70ish play and sing from 6:30 to 10:30. I thought I had died and gone to heaven. Old time country music at it's best. Incredible talent. Vicky and the girls behind the bar will look after you and make you feel welcome. Make sure you ask for a Makers Mark Sour!

We happened on to the Occidental Hotel museum on an overnight stay in Buffalo. This old hotel is the genuine thing with lots of historic pictures of famous guests, old barber chairs, and plenty of history. It is free and well worth a 30 minute detour.

Quaint bar. Good food and drinks. Reasonable. Clientele is a mixture of locals, tourists and at times, bikers.

Authentic historic hotel with numerous artifacts. A placemark in history that has been preserved for the enjoyment of future generations. Friendly staff allowed us to leisurely walk through the entrance and bar areas. Unfortunately, we were unable to look into the hotel rooms because they were occupied during our visit.

The hotel has a very interesting history and David and his crew make you feel right at home. We rearranged our schedule for a tour that (we thought) included seeing the suites. We were disappointed that we could not see them after changing our schedule. Our meal was good and we enjoyed David singing us a song. The hotel asks for a donation per person for the tour and the price of lunch is reasonable.

Loved the large suite! The time period decorations were great, the bed was incredibly comfortable, large bathroom was perfect, and the old time radio a sweet touch!

This hotel was a destination for us, as my husband wanted to visit the cowboy hotel. The hotel was lots of fun, with interesting rooms and lots of memorabilia. The beds were good and we slept well. The Virginian Restaurant, attached to the hotel, was also excellent. We had a scallops appetizer that I was a little skeptical of when it came out. The presentation was a little unappetizing. But it was delicious and my steak was also perfect. The food at the Busy Bee next door was disappointing.
