My husband had read about Mr. Powell's expedition, so while we were in the area, we visited the island. The Island itself is fairly small, but well maintained and well loved - there were many people that I would call "locals" enjoying the park, even though it wasn't very warm and rain was on the horizon. We walked down the river - watched a junk yard dog chase a group of whitetail deer from his territory. Then, we walked back to Expedition Island and saw the very spot that Mr. Powell's group set off from. Lot's of birds. The Park Authority was in the process of planting more indigenous trees and bushes, and removing something that was planted there, but became invasive. Nice.
Although it's a small park, it's very nice. It's in a great location and it's beautiful to go to any time of the year.
We saw salmon jumping, a doe and her little one, black birds and several geese, a ver peaceful park to walk in during the late afternoon in September.
If you are traveling through Wyoming and near Green River, Wyoming and you need a break, this is a great place to stretch your legs. It is free...with plaques throughout the park on history of the particular area. For the kids there are swings and slides and also a water park nearby that is free for a quick cool off. Make sure you bring some insect spray as this is right on the Green River and mosquitoes love this area. I used a dryer sheet on my self which seemed to keep them away. They have nice covered picnic areas also. I certainly enjoyed the relaxing scenery. There is also a bike park for bikers that runs along the river and if you like kayaking the Green River provides great sport for the beginners or just for a relaxing float.
A small island with markers describing different historic rafting trips. Lots of benches. Very verdant this months.
This is a lovely little spot in Green River WY to stop if you are visiting, or you just want to take a break from the Interstate when passing through. [Just a ferw minutes from I80] It's near a quiet residential area where you can find easy parking. In the nearby park there is a Union Pacific rail carriage with views of Red rocks behind the railway yard. You can stroll over a pedestrian bridge and alongside the Green river where you will come across a small unkept memorial garden. There is not much here other than the peace and quiet with the soothing sound of the river, but it's a fine opportunity for a little 'time out' from the road to stretch your limbs and clear your minds and that's exactly what we needed as we came off the Interstate and made our way to Manilla UT for our visit to Flaming Gorge. Very nice.
This is a great place for a picnic, playing in the river, or just kicking back and resting to cool off.this is also a great place for a quicky history lesson considering this is where John Powell started his exploration of the Colorado River system. So you get fun and history!!
I have grown up at this spot and love it. It's a great access point to the river or just a place for a nice picnic. It's right next to the splash park, which many kids love and use all summer long. There are grills for use and it is also the access point to the green belt which is very enjoyable for a walk or bike during the summer. It follows the river and leads beyond to Straton Meyers park and beyond. If you make it this far, there is also a bicycle course set up. There are also lots of events that go on during the summer at Expedition Island. Flaming Gorge Days holds activities there such as dodge ball and kayaking. There is also a River Festival with a shrimp boil and live music. This is where many people in Green River spend their time during the weekends and weeknights. You'll always see a friendly face too. It's a great place to to take your kids or stroll with your significant other. There's a play ground and open an open field good for a game of Frisbee or football. I really enjoy this island and recommend it to anyone traveling through.
This park along the river is very pleasant. The shade and greenery was a welcome change after many miles of sagebrush country. You can follow a paved pathway across a bridge from the island along the Green River. It made for a nice walk in the late afternoon.
it was beautiful and a surprise to find in a town this size. We enjoyed walking along the river on a summer evening.
What a surprise!!! Loved the walking trails and the ground along the Green River. Wosh we had taken our bikes. nice picnic areas. What a peaceful setting . I believe anyone would enjoy this little slice of Green River
This park is part of the Green River, WY park district. It has many plaques thattell the story of many Green River/Colorado River adventurers/ explorers whostarted their trips from this island. The most famous was John Wesley Powell. In additionto the short trail around the island there is direct connection to a riverside trailsystem that offers nice river, town, and mountain views. The island park visit caneasily be combined with a visit to the local history museum--Sweetwater CountyMuseum, located just a few blocks north. Both are accessible by car or a not to farwalk between them.
