When my Husband and I eventually found this place, we thought it was stunning. Very peaceful and beautiful. We only found out about Plaza Blanca via a photo displayed in our hotel in Santa Fe and then asked other tourists for directions as staff in our hotel did not know where it was. This should be advertised more and better should be directions available.
If you're into outdoor scenery this is a must do in Abiquiu. I'll let the photos do the talking. It's a little difficult to find so I'll spend my time giving detailed directions. From Abiquiu you can get there going either East or West. Bode's General Store and gas station is the best landmark. From there travel west 0.6 miles and turn right at County Road (CR) 155. You'll have 1.6 miles of decent dirt road then pavement. At the begining of the pavement drive 2.2 miles and turn left at the large Dar Al Islam entrance. Back on dirt for 1.4 miles to Plaza Blanca. The road splits with the left road going up to the Mosque and right heads right into the Plaza Blanca parking area. Just follow the trail or wander at your discretion. I would recommend that you take the trail to the cliffs and then head up the canyon for more spectacular scenery.
My husband and I spent the morning hiking around this area. Trail is well marked to the small stream, but not as well once you get deeper into the small canyon. But you can't get lost as it's pretty much one way in and out. We were by ourselves the entire morning until midday when we encountered another couple on trails behind the main rock formations. So could have spent more time in that area where there is a man made Labrynth. Very interesting rock formations and lovely hiking spot. The time you spend here could be short if you just stop to see the oft photographed main rock wall or a good half day of exploration. Plaza Blanca is a very peaceful, stunningly beautiful place. The hiking is easy. If you are in to bird watching or geology, don;t miss this one!
The White Place - made famous by Georgia O'Keeffe paintings - is beautiful. Go there to hike through the limestone rock formations. They go on and on and on - it's a great place to visit, take picture sand hike through the rocks. It can be a bit hard to find - the trails start at the El Rito Road turnoff and it's very close to Dar al Islam.
The view are wonderful and the hiking is very easy. The trail is not so easy to follow. They need ore markings. Very unusual rock formations.
This is an incredible place. You can see why Georgia painted here. You must bring water and your camera
We considered several options for a morning excursion and our hotel staff said Plaza Blanca should not be missed. Now we can't wait to back and stay longer. The area is enormous and stunning. No wonder OKeefe liked to come here.
Great for kids and teens! Just on the road behind Bode's in Abiquiu. ASk for directions and don't miss it!
We spent four hours walking in and around the White Place. The cliffs are white stone, carved by the wind, resulting in very interesting shapes. There are small slot canyons to explore. We were there on a Thursday morning and we did not see anyone else. I'd go back in a heartbeat!
We were seeking out Georgia O'Keeffe's White Place. We got driving instructions at Ghost Ranch. You travel on three miles of gravel road once you leave the paved road. I thought it was beautiful and intriguing, worth the effort of finding it. It is an easy area to hike.
After reading reviews, we decided to check out this geological feature.Appears to be some sort of bentonite formation and is really not hard to find. While it is worthwhile to visit and ponder the forces that shaped them, these versions of "hoodoos" are hardly awe-inspiring.If in Abiquiu these are not a significant detour but don't drive for miles for this attraction alone.
Beautiful and unique scenario. Road is paved except for last 0.6 mile which is dirt. Easily done by passenger car if the road is dry. Definitely walk the 1/4 mile trail which is clearly evident. Only challenge was one blog site indicates it is close to Ghost Ranch which it is not. Look for Mamacita Pizzaria south of Abiquiu to find where to turn off US 84.
The "white place" painted by Georgia O'Keefe and you can see why she was inspired. They are no longer telling people about it on the Abiquiu house tour, but if you quietly ask after the tour they will give you directions. It's just outside of Abiquiu, down a dirt road, through the gates of Dar al Islam. Park your car at the small sign and take the short walk into the canyon (stay on the established paths!). It's gorgeous, a little eerie (I was the only one there) and unlike anything I've ever seen. I'm not sure how long it will be open to the public so if you have the chance to go, you definitely should. You will never forget it.
We've hiked all around Santa Fe, but we were amazed at the sites at Plaza Blanca. The white stone is amazing, and it was truly a beautiful hike. Getting started is a little challenging, but go through the gate at the end of the parking lot and then follow the creek bed when you get to it.It is tough to find. There are good directions available at their web site - http://www.plaza-blanca.comBe aware that there are rattlesnakes in the area, as we saw a baby one sunning himself.
