If you don't feel like hiking there is a beautiful scenic overlook just off Hwy 82 (west of Cloudcroft) where you can get a good view of the old railroad trestle along with an exhibit explaining the history of the railroad in that area.

History and the surroundings of the mountain top, the weather is great, deer and Elk all around. Lots of restaurants to choose from. Retail stores where you will find great quality of jewelry. There is no disliking about this place.

Great hike on old railroad roadbed. Nice view of restored trestle. Take trail down to Mexico Canyon trestle (make sure to check out remains of S-trestle) then walk back on easy roadbed back to rebuilt station.

You can walk out in the enclosed platform and look at the mountain scenery. The trestle is still there and was used by the loggers. It was the only train in the Sacramento mountains

If you are stressed for any reason, this is the place to go. It was absolutely wonderful. The pine trees are thick and abundant, the natural vegetation is beautiful, the quietness is out of this world.Easy drive up the mountain. About 9,000 ft in altitude.

This is a nice little hike and its extremely convenient if you're staying in Cloudcroft. The trail head is right outside town. It was recommended to me by someone who grew up in Cloudcroft, and I wasn't disappointed.

This trail to the Mexican Canyon trestle involves some steep climbs. You are rewarded with a wonderful view of the restored trestle. And if you arrive at 11:45, you will hear the sounds of the "ghost train"! I suspect the sounds are also played at 3:45 based on the signs at the highway pulloff at the other end of the trestle.

Great place for picnics and hiking. The hike to the trestle can be strenuous for older people. It can get very hot during the summer months, so don't forget to take water!

Great for picnicking, walking and taking in the vistas. Early morning and sunset are the prettiest times.

This has an entrance off Rt. 82, just before entering Couldcroft proper when coming from Alamogordo. There is a short drive in and then one comes to a roughly circular drive, where one can park. There is a large log-type building as you enter, where there is a restroom with an environmental toilet and a sink with running water. There is parking for handicapped and a paved trail nearby, but we didn't take it so don't know whether it goes very far. We parked on the other side of the circle near the trail entrance. There is one trail entrance, but there are lots of trails to take -- they split off after about 1/4 mile. At the T-head, you can take the Trestle Trail to the right that goes to the Trestle Overlook and further, which is very nice and we have done in the past. This time we took the left trail which leads to the Old Cloudcroft Highway Trail. It is a wide trail having been a road at one time. It goes downhill and the drop-off to your left is amazing. One can be on the trail and see the top of a very tall tree at your shoulder level. You get a view of the Tularosa Basin from this trail, too, but the better view is from the Trestle Overlook on the other trail. Just remember that you can go a long way, but you have to climb back uphill to get to your car.
