During the summer months, the dam at Elephant Butte is opened up to turn the Rio Grande from a step-across river to a 5- 10 foot deep river moving about 4 miles per hour. For a small fee, "Captain Bob" rents you anything from a tube to an inflatable kayak to a 6 person party float along with life jackets and drops you off near the dam to float lazily down the river back to your starting point. The total trip takes about 90 minutes to 2 hours depending on how quickly the water is moving. The scenery is great and there are just enough fast moving spots to make it interesting. Our kids loved it. This will definitely be a future stop for us when passing through T or C.
