This is a microbrewery. They have tastings. As far as atmosphere goes this place is like most New Jersey Microbreweries. Not much in the way of atmosphere. You go here to try their beers and buy it if you like it. Some of their special beer is in prefilled 32oz growlers. They can some of their beer. The rest you buy by the refill i.e., you bring in a 64 ounce container and they fill it with beer, you take it home and drink it. You can buy full glasses of beer or a tasting of several beers. If you are thinking of buying one specific beer they may give you a free sample to try before you buy. If you have never been there before I would recommend paying for the tastings so you can sample most/all their beers. Now for the beer. They are generally into hops. If you like beer with a lot of hops you will probably love their beer. I am not a big hop fan so while I like their beers I do not go crazy over it however they recently had a pumpkin beer that was aged in barrels that I really liked and a barrel aged stout that I really liked that was only sold in prepackaged 32oz growlers.

This quant little rust-orange building holds one of New Jersey's best kept secrets–– Regular Coffee! No, I'm not talking about your average cup of Joe here. This beer will blow you away with it's smooth and creamy taste of coffee, milk, and sugar. Pair it with a Taylor ham (pork roll for all you non-natives), egg and cheese bagel and you have the perfect Jersey staple. With a very friendly and knowledgable staff, Carton Brewery is the perfect place to day-trip and learn about beer by the people who truly love what they do. You are pretty much guaranteed to leave there with a smile on your face. Just be sure to get there early as crowds tend to build up by late afternoon.

NJ beer lovers, this one's for you. Carton has it all - fantastic beer, great atmosphere, and a pretty cool staff. (Very patient with all my questions!) Enjoy a short but informative tour then head up to the crowded (hey, they got a good thing going here) but cozy and 'everyone is a friend here' vibe tasting room. For a scant $5 enjoy your first tasting, Boat Ale. Then take your 5 poker chips and taste 5 more brews of your choosing. Hang out and enjoy the awesome beer, awesome deal, and awesome time. You can purchase cold cans of Boat or 077XX (the only beers they can) as well as growlers and cool Carton swag. No food, open weekends, check their always updated Facebook page for hours and beer availability. If you love beer and live in NJ, this place will make you Jersey proud!

Came here late afternoon on a Saturday and the place was packed. Did a quick tour downstairs then got to sample the beers upstairs. A great value...$5 for 6 samples and a tour. The tasting room was pretty crowded and had a pretty bad flow, but everyone there was nice and understanding. Bought 2 4-packs to go for $22 which I thought were a little overpriced. Overall a good stop if you're in the area.

Tour is quick, but informative. $5 for 6 tastings, you don't keep the tasting glass. Had to buy one to take home for another $5. Tasting room is nicely done and very clean. Sofas to sit down and relax and stand up bar. Staff were very nice and interacted with everyone. The beers were good and you can purchase growlers or bring your own, they do have some of their beers in 4 packs for purchase as well. Overall a place to definately visit.

Try this place for something fun and different to do to kick off the weekend. The tour is quick and the reward is worth it. Upstairs tasting room is very comfortable and relaxing. Exposed brick and wood beams and big canvas photos surround the small bar and 2 couches. You can't beat the $5 for 6 glasses value. My fave is 077xx, the Boat is good too. We got there on the later side so not crowded at all. Definitely recommend for something different to do.

I know this is a brewery, but I wasn't impressed by any of the people that worked there (minus our tour guide). The bartenders & girl we met (maybe a manager) seemed more interested in hanging out & chatting with one another rather than educating myself & my friend about the beer. It was unwelcoming & felt more like we were invading their turf. Very similar to a college type atmosphere. Seemed like all the employees were there for drinks & to hang out. Not sure if we'll go back.

We were in the area this past Saturday, and decided to pop by Carton Brewing for a tour and taste. It's a small, unassuming building on a side street, across the street from a school. The only sign is a neon sign is the upper window. There were fairly few cars around, and it looked empty. We walked inside, and we were immediately greeting by a woman who took us on a quick but informative introductory tour. Basic tour, but well-done. We then proceeded to the tasting area upstairs for a tasting. Tastings are $5 apiece, and for your money you get a smallish tasting glass full of their basic beer, Boat, and then 5 casino chips. Each chip is worth a taste of a beer. There were 8 options, ranging from the lighter Boat to a stout and a porter. You will get your fill, certainly. Good beer, too.The one thing to watch - when we went upstairs at about 2:30PM, there are about 30 assorted people. By the time we had finished our six choices, there was almost no room to move in the tasting area, and too many people were congregating by the bar, limiting access for others. From what we were told, the tastings fill up beginning at 3-3:30 every weekend, and early (12-3 ish) is the best time for a more mellow tasting experience.

Quick tour was informative. Tasting room was great. Mix of 20 something's, beer geeks and other friendly types. Staff were conversational and I learned about each of 6 beers. Beers are very good. Hope the craft brewers can continue to be successful. Kane is also worth a visit

Had one of their beers at Edison Ale House. Next day we went on the tour. Simple no frills tour but every employee loves working there and it shows. Exceptional staff. We paid $5 and tasted 6 different beers. My favorite is the 077xx. Great laid back atmosphere and amazing beer. Great way to spend an hour or two with some friends.

It's funny, the last place you'd expect a brewery would be this coastal town of Atlantic Highlands. Their beers are delicious and craft made. A fun outing in the town of Atlantic.

A excellent source for a local microbrew. If you like sour beer Monkey Chase the Weasel I is not too be missed. The brewery tour is a fun way to meet the staff and then it's up to the tasting room

For someone who has lived in the area (and has been drinking Carton brews at local establishments) for years, I am ashamed to admit that I just went to the brewery recently. Rather than hanging my head in shame, I'm just going to boast about how great this brewery is! It. Is. Awesome. Do not miss this local gem. Upon entering the brewery you are greeted by your enthusiastic brewery tour guides. As a craft beer fan, I can relate to their passion and excitement. They walk you through the brewing process, tell you what makes their beer taste so darn good, and give you a little interesting history on the building as well. Then it is time for the best part of all! The beer sampling! For $5 we were able to taste 6 of their beers. These are not little tiny tastes, but good sized samples. The beer is so fresh and they have such a variety of styles. They make a couple of sour beers which, at first, I did not think I was going to like, but their Something Like Sandy turned out to be my favorite of all! I'm adding this to my list of places to bring all of my out of town friends to so they can experience the best the Jersey Shore has to offer. Pick up a growler of Boat and then head over to one of the many fantastic restaurants in the Atlantic Highlands. What are you waiting for? Go now!

I grew up, and my family still lives, in the Atlantic Highlands area. Ever since I read about Carton Brewing Company and tried some of their beers on past trips, I have wanted to visit the brewery. The brewery is in a nondescript building right of of First Avenue in Atlantic Highlands (across from the elementary school). The first floor houses the brewery and the second the tasting room. Tours start upstairs at the bar and includes a bit of the buildings history (storage space for a Methodist tent community that used to exist in Atlantic Highlands) and a lot about the Carton brewing philosophy and planned growth (yeah canned beer coming soon!). As for their beers, for $5 you get 6 Carton "poker chips" that you can trade for samples. Overall, I liked almost everything I tasted. I can highly recommend the Boat Beer, the 077xx double IPA, and the Carton Canyon (lager). Smartly, their are signs in the tasting room for each of their beers that describe the brew and the ingredients. This allows those who have allergies, for example, to stay away from certain beers (for example, I'm allergic to peanuts, so the GORP was a no-go for me). As Carton continues to grow and experiment, I look forward to trying more of their beer.
