I popped in on a rather freezing Tuesday afternoon (watch the opening hours - 2pm to 4:30pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays only) and was clearly the first visitor who'd been in for a while. There's a cornucopia of fascinating local memorabilia of the kind that in a town with less historic merit than Exeter might be banal. However, painting of independence and civil war heroes from the town, an original 17th century press and a wealth of documents dating from Exeter's time as the capital during the war of independence and a wonderful granfather clock make this an excellent use of an hour of your time.I was lucky enough to be shown around by one of the ladies who runs the Historical Society. They are supremely knowledgeable and well worth listening to.
As an artist I have performed in many different venues some are good and some are horrible. The folks at the Exeter Historical Society were very gracious, caring, and helpful. They made me feel special. Went out of their way to make me comfortable with their performing space.
Very friendly and knowledgable staff. Helped me with family history. Shared memories of Exeter. Such a wonderful place, keeping Exeter history alive!
The Exeter Historical Society houses a great small museum which showcases Exeter's long history. This stop is a must for historians and history buffs alike. Stop and talk to the curator who can share wonderful stories about the town, and direct you to some of the more fascinating places in Exeter.
