Great place to pick up those unique Antiqueish Nik Nak from local artisans. The custom made boxes are top notch not cheap but worth it.
The term "off the beaten path" was probably inspired by this place. At first glance...quaint and that's before you even exit the car. In the summer months you'll have the opportunity to see the wood mill in action but during these cold winter months you'll just find room after room of the most amazing treasures.
First the road to the Mill was beautiful. The Mill has 7 rooms of the Shaker baskets, antiques and very unusual gifts, had the best time. Owner was very friendly and helpful.
The mill has been making wooden boxes the same way since colonial times. The also sell antiques and other handmade items. My husband and I really enjoyed shopping there and exploring the grounds. There is wonderful the history there. Unfortunately they only do tours on Saturdays, which we would have enjoyed, but were were there on a weekday.
Great small factory from the 18th-19th century tucked away in the woods. This place makes "birch oval boxes" for Williamsburg and used to supply the whole US with measuring boxes and storage boxes for the pantry. Then the world moved onto "bigger and better" desigh at lower cost and quality. This started out as a cottage industry and then with the industrial revolution became semi automated. And people were hired to come and work in the factory. There is a tour that you can take that goes through step by step as to how the boxes were made. You can also walk around on your own to discover some of the rooms. There is a gift shop of ccourse where you can buy one measurer or a whole set of boxes to store things in. I like them better than Longenberger baskets.
It was very greAt to see. The staff is wonderful and if you like history this is great. They also have a great gift shop that is big. Full of all hand made arts and crafts ad a lot of woodwork.
This old mill is fascinating and still working. It's located in Wilton, but several miles from the town center. Years ago, they proved acceptable to the last of the NH Shakers, and were given the right to manufacturer measures in the shaker style, which were subsequently sold at Shaker Village in Canterbury, NH. (At least I think that's how the story goes.) A visit here is well worth the trip, and so will be the shaker box (or two) you'll just have to take home with you.
A rare find in the country of New Hampshire and worth the drive there. They are famous for their handmade maple boxes but also have many antiques and reproductions for sale, as well. On the driveway in, make sure to see the waterfall and then walk around to the old fire house and farrier shop. They also have Mill tours on Saturdays where you can see the artisans at works long their boxes.
Our snowshoe adventure as put on hold due to rain while staying at the Hancock Inn. The innkeeper suggested a trip to Frye's Measure Mill. We made the trip and were glad we did. This working water powered mill was a trip back to a simpler time. The amazing Shaker and other boxes they produce are works of handmade art. The gift shop blew me away. We approached the mill, which looks every bit its age, and were taken aback when we walked into the beautifully rustic gift shop. We learned about the history of the mill and its operation from the friendly shopkeeper Pam and thoroughly enjoyed the vist. We plan to return to get a full tour in the summer.
This is a functioning water-powered mill that produces handmade Shaker-style boxes, bowls, and other wooden objects. It is also a museum and educational center. We have been there several times and went again to pick up presents for relatives who appreciate the value of beautiful hand-crafted useful objects made with local materials without using electricity. The backwoods drive to the mill alone is lots of fun. Check the schedule for educational events, which in the warmer months attract young people for a real education about the time when water-power was king. This mill has been producing wooden objects since 1858!
My Parents were out to "experience" NewEngland", this place was a great experience. Well presented, you are allowed to understand how the mill functioned and learn a bit about life back in time. This is a great way to share New England history.
An old mill with a blacksmith and damf with water wheel. If you are looking for colonial artifacts this is the place to get them as well as their shaker style wooden boxes some of which are hand painted.
Bowls, bowls, and wooden everything. A terrific shop and lots of beautiful, hand-made goods. A real showplace. A little out of the way, but you can find it. Well worth the trip.
Interesting old mill that now houses a gift/antique shop. Lots of neat stuff and beautiful shaker type boxes.
This is a historical mill site; which sells its own product. Not much else to say. not worth a special trip but if you are driving by, fine.
