The hike to the red pine is the best part- the trail takes you through a lovely portion of the park, but yes the top of the tree fell- It's still a great stop on the Wilderness Drive!!!
This short walk is worth it if you are curious what a Red Pine looks like. The tree is missing its top now, but still has a beautiful color of bark. There is nothing else to see on this trail.
The trail to the big red pine off Wilderness Drive is cool, as it goes by the bison kill site. The big pine itself broke off years ago. The other red pine trail is off the south entrance road, and leads through over a mile of old-growth red and white pines.
The size of the Red Pine was amazing...didn't know we grew'em that big in Minnesota!
The trail itself is very nice, but in 2007 the top of the tree was taken off in a wind storm so the only thing left is a large portion of the trunk.....I bet it was beautiful before it fell.
Hike this trail almost every weekend. The Red Pines are spectacular!
