Having played golf all over the world, I think this is a beautiful course in great condition as of September 1, 2014. The upgrade has been done very well. There is the standard practice area and 2 different practice greens, one designated for practicing pitching. The course is hilly. Back 9 is tighter and more challenging. Nice mix of par 3, 4 and 5. Lots more water on the back 9. Both 9's are very pretty.Easy to make on-line reservations. However it took more than 5 hours to play a round here today. There was a ranger going around but it was not clear what he was doing. We saw several groups that were more than a hole behind. It took more than 5 hours to play a round on Labor Day. This is the kind of thing that's really hurting golf. Ways have to be found to speed things up. People will enjoy Keller a lot more if they can deal with this.
The City of St. Paul has spent $12 Million in upgrading this classic layout to today's design standards without compromising the original layout. The result is excellent, they've waited long enough for the new grassing to grow in before reopening, so conditions were excellent, the greens rolling well with slight undulations. Here's a link to an article on the history of the course and the recent renovation:http://blog.forelinksters.com/2014/07/20/keller-golf-course-st-paul-a-classic-reopening-after-a-12-million-renovation/
The City of St. Paul is closing this course on October 1, 2012 for renovation. I just played the course and for the life of me I have no idea why they are changing this gem of a public course. Sure it isn't as long as some but I'm tired of playing courses that are 7,000 yards. I wish the bureaucrats would leave these alone and pay attention to more pressing public matters. If you get chance to play this before the end of September, please do. You won't be disappointed.
