The Comstock house used to be the edge of town and for many years Moorhead has grown around it. The Comstock family lived there for generations and were civic and business leaders who believed strongly in education. They even taught their servants. Their children were accomplished and traveled and one daughter brought things back from China including a large gong. The tour guide won't brag too much though because we are modest in MN. Brought children with and they enjoyed tour, the guide asked them questions and showed them things and involved them too. It's a small house so not too long of tour for kids. It's very elegant has many things and is well maintained.
My wife and I took advantage of the Comstock House’s free day in June. The house is managed by the MN Historical Society, so there are not many of these days, but I would strongly suggest (at least if you are local) to be on the lookout for these as I wouldn’t have paid to see the house. I am still young and love the history of the Comstock family and house, but it isn’t for everyone. The tour was interesting; I think I would have preferred to just walk about on my own. Every time someone came in the front door, we had to stop our tour and then the guide would catch them up, it was probably busier because of the free day, but it didn’t make for the best experience. Everything is presented well in a way that seemed like they just moved out a few weeks ago. They have done a great job keeping history alive in the Comstock House and I appreciate that. I would suggest taking a walk of the historic neighborhood behind the house as there are many other historic homes to see.
