It was wonderful to take the drive through the refuge. It was little tricky to get there with the GPS, but found it ok just driving around. We went around sunset because I heard that wildlife would be more active then, but unfortunately we didn't see any while we were there. However, it was still a beautiful time to see the scenery. I will definitely be coming back and hope to spend more time walking the trails.
I have gone here several times over the past few years. I love going at random times since you never know what wildlife you will run into. There are times I have seen very little and other times it seems the whole refuge has come alive. I love it in the fall as it is beautiful. I have seen sandhill cranes, bald eagles, ducks, geese and a whole host of other birds and wildlife. They also have trails you can hike. I have not done this. I always do the drive. It is so peaceful.
Much to offer throughout the year. Wildlife drive. Eagle viewing. Hiking trails. Abundant wildlife. If you like the great outdoors, this is the place to go.
We love visiting the Wildlife Drive as the loop is a nice relaxing place to go. I enjoy watching as the seasons change and the cycle of life begins and ends.
took the seven and half mile car trail. It was great! there were people in cars going slower that were available for assistance. Many turn outs and wildlife area to stop and look at stuff - including a pay telescope area. A must see if you are in the area!
I grew up near the wildlife refuge, but didn't appreciate it as a child. As an adult, I wish that we lived closer. The best times of day are early morning or near sunset to drive the wildlife trail. We visited again this weekend and enjoyed the eagles and sandhill cranes through the various viewing scopes. The killdeer were nesting next to the road and we got too close to more than one nest. Mama killdeer was remarkably vocal and protective of her nest. She was not intimidated by us at all. I wish we would have allowed more time to hike and explore on foot.
My son and I love to go here and walk the trails. Its nice to be able to get outside and enjoy nature. We go up there at least a few times every month and even take the dogs for runs in the woods.
I used to live only a couple miles from this trail. It is so beautiful, sepecially the pine forest part. They even have a part where you can hike up the side of the hill to a lookout. It is a pretty steep hike but well worth the view!
Nice hiking trails for a couple hours. Fair amount of wildlife. Good trails for running.
