Little Marion, Iowa, sometimes obscured by the bigger Cedar Rapids, does have some attractions, and Grainger House is one of them. Although it may not sit on large acres of land, this historic house is a very nice place to visit, and the volunteers are very knowledgeable and accommodating. Well worth a visit.
Built as a single room home in 1848 it was added on and then the Granger family rented it in 1873 and bought it in 1878. A lot of the furniture are from the house. The youngest son lived there until his death in 1969.Opened in summer 11/4, although the director was extremely friendly and knowledgeable and suggested to call for a private tour. The house has been AC so even in muggy hot Iowa weather it's pleasant to visit. It used to sit on 800 acres until the city of Marion started growing. She allowed the children to pick two not so perfect bricks laying in the back-yard which came form the streets of Marion and were made in 1901 by the Buffalo factory.5 dollars for adults and 3 dollars for children, do it, it was a great 2 hrs visit.
Old home preserved with furniture even the piano (which has a story of its own) and wonderful staff. Check times as not open all the time unless by appointment. They serve wonderful luncheons by appointment, mystery theater dinners, etc. The Marion history abounds even into the carriage house behind.
If you're ever in the Marion area, you HAVE to go to the Granger House Museum. It's so cool to see the rooms preserved exactly as they were when the family lived there.
Sounds like someone enjoyed Halloween at the Granger House when the flood displaced the folks at Usher's Ferry! That fall, they brought their talented volunteers to the museum so they could continue to offer kids a safe alternative to being out on the street. Fortunately, visitors these days don't have to worry about Dr Hack-it-Off or his ghostly cohorts; the Granger House happily continues to be spook-free so there are no worries when you tour. Why not plan a visit and come see for yourself just how awesome we are!
