Very well preserved and well-guided tour tells the story of the Battle of Franklin, and how it was the beginning of the end of the war. A must-see stop for Civil War buffs and visitors to Franklin.

This tour is l-o-n-g, and some in our party were getting antsy. The tour guide we had, as I imagine is true with all, was SO knowledgeable. We loved it - just don't go if you want a quick walk-through. If that is the case, just walk the grounds and look in the store.

Amazing, informative and entertaining tour. Learned about the Carter and Lotz family experiences on that fateful November 30, 1864. Being in the basement and seeing the names on chairs of the family members seeking safety was chilling. Cannot imagine the horror they experienced.

The intimacy of the tour guides cannot be overstated. Their grasp of the situation, and their ability to put it into today's values was wonderful.

The thought of what happened here during the Battle of Franklin, is simply horrific. The thought of what the children had to endur and what they had to see in the aftermath. The house with all of its bullet holes and the cannon ball hole, is just crazy. And the three out buildings that are still standing from that day are also all bullet ridden. The story here is just amazing.

They have done a great job interpreting this site and it's just getting better. You can see bullet holes and shell damage from 150 years ago and because of the constant work to get rid of modern structures around the battle line area, it's becoming easier and easier to interpret and see what happened that fateful evening. Franklin should be proud of this site.

While dealing with the ice and snow during a week long stay in Nashville in February, I took the risk of driving down to both Winstead Hill and then into Franklin to tour the Carter House. As I was the only visitor at at the Carter House at the time, I was treated by Mike, a most superb tour guide, to a one on one history lesson of the entire battle of Franklin. Walking through the house and around the ice covered grounds, and also using maps of the battle, Mike held forth for a good hour, keeping me spellbound for the entire time. I considered myself fairly well-read about the battle, but the intimate details and stories Mike provided were fascinating and transported me back to the time of the battle, almost as if Mike had been an on-site witness to the events he so well described. The inclement weather forestalled a walking battlefield tour, which I intend to take the next time I make it to the area, but the museum and tour of the house were more than worth the modest cost. Incidentally, the Battle of Franklin Trust is actively engaged in fighting the second battle of Frankilin, that is, the battle against commercial development of the the battlefield itself. They have already reclaimed several properties, with more being planned, to save for future generations to enjoy and to preserve the memory of the brave men who clashed on these grounds over 150 years ago.

Visited Franklin with my 15 year old son and this was his favorite stop. Tours seem to run frequently and we had no wait (and before we finished our tour another had started). Mike was an excellent tour guide and did a great job of engaging the adults, teen, and children on the tour. Mike said he also does battlefield tours and if we get back to Franklin I would most definitely do that tour. The house tour was about an hour and covered the overall battle, the experience of the family in the house, the experiences of the soldiers outside, and the history of the family. My son liked the review of the map of the battle and getting to see the bullet holes and cannon ball hole in the house. We also toured the Lotz house and Carnton Plantation the same day - if I could do it again I would have save the plantation for day 2 because we were too tired to check out the grounds there. If I had to choose just one site to visit it would be the Carter House.

The guided tour will take one hour and has set times of day that it's given - suggest you call ahead for times. Unfortunately the next tour was going to put us off schedule so we couldnt' attend, however we did get to see the movie intro, walk the grounds and look at the map handout to get much of the information. Note that if you don't go on a tour, you can't go INSIDE the house. Next time we will plan better but would have been nice to know that in advance.

I was with the Tennessee Motor Coach 2015 Convention and we toured all three historic homes. I thought that tour guides were just awesome and they spoke with such passion as they ran through the events that unfolded. I was so happy when I found Tod Carter's grave in Rest Haven Cemetery which wasn't that far from the house.

The Carter House is part of the Battle of Franklin, and it seems so real. You see the bullet holes still in the house, you stand in the cellar where the Carter's and the Lotz families sought shelter during the battle. Be sure to see all the attractions in Franklin - it is well worth the trip

We learned a lot of history about the Civil War here. It felt like you were being taken back to the era of the Civil War and had a feeling that you could hear and see the battle that took place right in the yard of the Carter house. The only reason that I do not give this a rating of excellent is that the tour guide was ill and it was obvious. He tried really hard to do a good job, but felt that due to his illness that he left out some information.

I used to hate history and now enjoy it. It is pretty neat to think about what was happening back in time as they are telling you what happened. To walk in the houses and just see how good we ALL have it now. Great tour.
