Over the years I have lived here, and when I was able to camp, I spent a lot of time at the park. I have since been there just to drive through and was amazed at the beauty and awesome changes there. It is a very clean park, friendly people and a wonderful respite from life
If your looking for a campground with scenic views, breath taking peaks and long hikes try the Roosevelt National Forest. If you want a cheap camp ground to go fishing and slam some beers, this is the place for you.
We picked St. Vrain because of the location. We had plans for Denver, Boulder and Fort Collins and this site near the free way was ideal for us. The camp site was adequate. Sites were large and level. There was NO shade whatsoever, so it sucked a little as we were tenting. Our end of the park (site 21) had a lot of privacy and great sunrise views, but also some airplane and highway noise. It was about 4-5 min walk to the main washrooms, with pay showers. On top of camp fees there is a state park fee as well, so it wasn't super cheap. I'm not sure I would stay here again - nothing really special about it. I've stayed at many nicer campgrounds over the years, so I'd probably search a little more before settling on this one again.
This is a nice park. They have picnic areas with grills. There are several ponds with fish. They stick with trout bass and catfish. They also have a pond just for kids. The camp sites are very typical of what you would see at any other state park. The fishing for trout is good here. TIP: they sell parks passes here and boat passes if you need one. You can buy a year pass or a several day park pass for all Colorado parks. Call before you go and make reservations as this is a crowded and very busy park because it is so close to Denver and the highway. Also there are not as many trees as you would think they would have.
This is one of our favorite places to take our RV for short weekend trips. It must be the favorite of many others as well as the park fills up early for weekends very early in the season. It is close to home less than an hour away and it is great when we just want to get away for an evening or two or bring the grandkids for a weekend outing. The kids love it here. Plenty of space to run, explore, and find new friends. The south side of the park has full hookups but not much shade. The closer you can get to Coot Pond the better. The north side has a lot more shade but the sites are electric only. We have enjoyed both sides. The major plus to this park for us is that it is close to home and easy to get to but this also turns out to be its biggest downfall. I-25 is very close and can be seen from almost all sites and the highway noise from I-25 and highway 119 are constant and non-stop. If you are looking for an extremely quiet place to park, St Vrain is probably not for you.
I would give it a 3 1/2 because of the full hookups but not all sites have full hookups. The max length for a RV is 40 foot. But we have a 43 foot and we had no trouble getting into our pad. The park is right beside I-25 so there is traffic noise. The park is used mainly for fishing. There are about 10 ponds to choose from depending on what you want to fish for. Boats without gas engines are allowed on the ponds. There are trails around the park for observing wildlife. You do have some restaurants, gas stations and convenience stores near by. I wouldn't consider it a destination park for tourism.
So close to high way. Dumpsters were overflowing. Fishing was awful, water was so dirty even if you got a fish you wouldn't want to eat it. The hike was super easy and not much to look at.
This is a really nice state park only an hour north of Denver. The state park has nice amenities but is right off the interstate. We went fishing there on a Friday and it was nice (caught some fish!!) but you see the highway from everywhere and there isn't much shade, It is not a solitude camp ground it is a stop along the way campground. Clean bathrooms and pay showers. One other note one of the ponds is artificial lures only (Bald Eagle). This is very accessible for those who need handicapped access.
St. Vrain is more a city park than a state park. It's literally adjacent to a busy interstate AND really offers little more than fishing, hiking (little) and a great place to park your RV for a while. There are 4-5 (give or take) lakes... well... actually ponds that offer some great variety of fishing. If you just want to catch what you can.. go to Pelican Pond and bottom fish for some terrific channel cats or use a shiny lure and grab a fighting pike. I caught a pike (21") and my neighbors who took my spot caught a 2-3 lb. channel cat. It's the eastern "spot" under the cottonwood tree on Pelican Lake. Others were trout fishing on the other lakes but no luck for the week - was told. Stick to Pelican Pond - North and East sides. Good staff if you have questions. Being near the interstate give a 24-hour McDonalds (with internet) and a Walmart west on Hwy. 119. Most of the people I saw were people with RVs looking for a hookups.
