You must stop to take some photos of this spectacular view. This section of the San Juan Skyway is known as The Million Dollar Highway, one of the most scenic drives in America.
Wow! The drive through the gorge is amazing. Rugged rocky peaks everywhere. Along the gorge side there are many places where the road narrows with no guardrails. Speed limit through much of it is 25 and commercial trucks and RVs are not recommended as there are numerous switchbacks. That being said, be sure to stay in Ouray or Silverton and drive it in your car. Better yet, if you own a Jeep, get a map of the off road trails and be prepared to be wowed.
We went kayaking on the Uncompahgre river and we had lots of fun. The water was cold and the kayaking was great !
I rode in the back of an RV for this trip. It was SO SCARY! In a car, it might be ok. Beautiful views. Take it slow - you will get stuck behind someone eventually. If you are a thrill-seeker, then this drive is for you. It's like a roller coaster drive in your car. Yikes!
Nature at its finest! Many pull off vistas, a real twisty road to get to it. Not one I would want to travel in the winter. In the summer yes!
Take the million dollar highway due North out of Ouray and drive this scenic highway. Gorgeous views and amazing scenery. The road id a bit twisty and tight as it goes up but it's a well maintained 2 lane highway all the way and not frightening to drive at all as long as you take care.
I drove the Uncompahgre Gorge by Van last Thursday, Oct. 27, 2006. It took me by suprise. It had steep sides and a small shelf to drive on with two lanes of traffic for approximately 27 miles. There was no shoulder and no guard railes. Signs were posted to go 15, 20 or 25 miles an hour. There was hardly anyone on it and I was glad because I was driving right on the center line as far from the edge as I could get. It amounted to two feet away you could drop off to sudden death. My friend kept giving me visual reports like "I don't see a bottom below. " I screamed most of the way and I am not usually an emotional person. I would have turned around if I could have. It seemed the road was above the tree line and the views were outstanding -- if only I could have enjoyed it better. I am going to make T-Shirts that say "I drove the Uncompahgre Gorge", Photo of the Gorge "Have You?" written underneath it. My 79 year old friend is going to have a T-Shirt that says, "I rode shotgun on the Uncompahgre Gorge" with a photo. After our "hair raising ordeal" that drained me of most of my B vitamins, we have laughed at our experience and are glad we did it. But I don't think I have the nerves of steel to go through it again. However, I would love to return to Quray, Silverton, and Durango Colorado. Marilyn, age 58, Kansas flatlander.
