Great location, close to area hotels, restaurants and fun town shops. Good pricing for families. We came here for tubing and had an amazing time. The staff were great and by our third trip they knew our preferences of spinning and racing each other down the hill.
Our 6 year old and 10 year old LOVED this! The staff were very kind and helpful! Our kids had a blast going up the magic carpet and racing down in their innertubes. They didn't want to stop!
What a great experience attending winter carnival in Steamboat springs and especially the night time fireworks and extravaganza at Howelson Hill. The street events are in the town area Saturday and Sunday morning. A sightbto be seen with horses pulling children (and adults) down the Lincoln Street racing for the best time. Howelson is right in town so you can watch ski jumpers and skiers do their thing. The Saturday evening of winter carnival feature "the lighted man" as well as scores of kids coming down the hill and performing in the dark with lighted poles etc. The final fireworks are as good as any we have seen. This event and Howelson Hill make Steamboat truely ski town USA.
this facility is a great institution in Steamboat, we booked to stay in town so we could cross country ski and also watch the ski jump events that were planned for the festival weekend, it turned out to be an amazing experience. Not only great panoramic trails to ski with magnificient views, but best of all- the gorgeous kids of Steamboat who are so motivated to train and train and train, wow! these have to be the healthiest kids in the US! Super impressive
...if you get into town early, hit howelsen, check your gear, look around, check out tomorrow's olympians in training...
Howelsen offers a great alternative to the high price at Steamboat Ski Area if you just want to schuss down a few runs for a couple of hours. It's great fun and a pretty steep slope overlooking beautiful downtown Steamboat. Also home to one of the premier ski jumping complexes in the country.
Howelsen Hill is a great low cost option for skiing - an adult full day ticket is just $25 and our first tracks tickets - which provides skiing from 1 pm - 3 pm is just $10. A youth all day ticket is $15 for the day - and our mini magic carpet, which is perfect for teaching never ever skiers - is always free.
A jumping hill in the winter, Howelsen has some good Mtn Bike trails in the summer, through woods and meadows...Climb up is hard, ride down sweet..
We have been to Howelsen Hill for guided snowshoeing in the winter, to watch ski jumping competitions both summer and winter, and to ride the Alpine slide. Have not skied there but saw lots of families with kids practicing skiing/boarding on the trails on the back side of the mountain last winter when we were snowshoeing. It is a small area, but a lift ticket is a small fraction of the cost of skiing at Steamboat Resort and it's a beautiful and historic place. My impression is that lots of the locals learn to ski at Howelsen, and many Olympians have trained there. It's worth a visit to Olympic Hall (on the upper floor of the larger log building) to see all the flags for so many athletes who have trained there. The ski jumping competitions are a lot of fun to watch. You'll see a lot of locals and even some current or future Olympians at these events.
Great for a couple runs or to watch the ski jumping. Seldom crowded and plenty of parking. I have more fun here than at the big mountain.
This place is walking distance from downtown. A group of families came here for tubing. it was not too crowded and was a good time for all. Prices were reasonable and the course was not too fast for the younger kids. Staff was friendly
This looked a like a fun place to take the kids, but be aware, if it is snowing, they can't keep the tubing lanes up to speed. Unfortunately, we chose to go snow tubing on our last day of our trip, and it had been snowing all day. The tubes could barely make it a third of the way down the lane. You can't control Mother Nature, and the employees were all apologetic, but if possible, take the kids snow tubing on a sunny day.
I apologize that you had a bad experience at the tubing hill - this is definitely not a normal experience. Our ski area supervisor immediately inspected the tubing hill for safety and we groomed the hill the night we received this - we groom the hill regularly to ensure that the tubing corridors are smooth with adequate snow berms to ensure that all tubes stay in their lane. Thank you for bringing your concerns to our attention.
We had seen the Howelson Ski area for years and had never stopped. This year we took a day off and went tubing. The kids loved it. People there were nice. And it was facinating watching all the kids practicing various ski disciplines.
It was a rainy/snowy night but the kids had a great time and it did not break the bank. An hour of tubing was plenty for us since the rain made it pretty wet but a fun something to do one night before dinner and after a day of activities.
