This is a lovely home, as it would have been equipped circa 1900. It's a bit like snooping through someone's house while they're out because you can easily imagine that people still live there. The dining room table is set and ready for dinner. I took my mother there and she loved seeing familiar bits from her early childhood. Old bathrooms and kitchens are always fascinating and the splendor of the era is readily evident. At one time, Glens Falls had the highest concentration of millionaires in the country. The docent knew her local history and was very happy to answer questions. The place is well kept and has a small but nice gift shop. If you're in the area on vacation and hit a rainy day, go to the Chapman, LARAC, and then the Hyde, which are all nearby, for a very lovely day.

the docent had wonderful way of explaining everything. Hubby is antique lover so she was able to show him several items that he had no idea what they were. It was really nice museum of a home. Dishes in dining room were beautiful!

I loved the information shared by our guide and how knowledgeable she was. We found out a lot about the area that we did not already know.

The hoped for sunny, mild spring day didn't quite work out in April, but we found this museum on tripadvisor as a Plan B. The museum is formed around the actual house that a prominent Glens Falls family lived in with the house set as it was in 1900. Self tour, including going up the sweeping elegant staircase to the bedrooms and an old bathroom with modern plumbing of the day. Not sure how seniors negotiated the 'bend' in the stairs near the top. Where the railing is on the left, the stairs become very narrow in the 'bend' so be careful coming down. You could skip going upstairs if safer and still enjoy the rest of the museum. Beautiful furnishings and accessories. An exhibit offering very early photos taken by Seneca Ray Stoddard is fascinating, with some magnified many times and displayed on the walls so that much detail is visible of carriages, bicycles, clothing etc. Very helpful lady at the desk has a myriad of stories and details to add, so allow time to listen - it is worth it to enjoy her experiences. Changing exhibits also offered.

The Chapman can be overlooked by people visiting Glens Falls or Lake George. But they shouldn't! This regional history museum has interesting changing exhibits on various history topics. In addition, they have a lovely restored Victorian home that shows what life was like for a middle class family in the late Victorian era in Glens Falls. Centrally located next to downtown, you can combine your visit with lunch or dinner at one of the many fine restaurants in the revitalized downtown. It's worth a visit!
