Great conditions ,beautiful veiw from every hole... I've played with my foursome as well as my wife ..... challanging enough for the "man glofer " in all of us and still enjoyable for my wife and I to spend a great afternoon....
Haven't done this in years, it was perfect. Walked the entire place, the light house, the rock pile and the beach.
Playing a twilight round of the back nine holes, beautiful greens, quiet course and the glimpse of a fox and family made for a terrific evening.
My husband loves to play Montauk Downs even though he's not that good a golfer hence the flogging! It's a beautiful course but the wind can be strong at times.
The Montauk Downs State Park Golf Course is very well run and maintained. My husband always plays there when we visit Montauk. Besides the course, there is a practice putting area and golf range to practice shots.Bring your clubs....you won't be disappointed.
Lovely course, great value. Brilliant setting just out of town, easy to get to and friendly staff. I really enjoyed my round and the driving range. Shame the pool closes so early.
By most public standards this course gets very high marks. Easy to get to , organized, and fun.The front 9, and the first 3 holes, are far less interesting than the next 4 holes. Raised greens are the only challenge with a few traps and generous fairways make for a quick round. The back nine are more unique holes, some with water hazards, others with lots of traps and even a few tough par 3 's over 175 yards, As a Reece Jones course it shares his raised greens, plays longer than you think, and a good challenge for most 7-17 handicaps. Pretty woods and hills make up the landscape and cart paths easy to use with up to date carts with GPS and the works. For NY residents its only $ 48 weekends, less on weekdays , and double that for out of state guests. You must register in advance online or call them as it operates in the NYS parks system. I will go back this fall when the trees are turning colors and more cool air will be another way to play this course.
First time played. I am presently a 10.5 handicapper. Very enjoyable with respect to the course layout and challenge. Played from the Blue tees (6,598 yards/6,033 meters). Black tees are at 6,988 yards/6,389 meters). Red tees sport 5,541 yards/5,066 meters). There are four tee boxes. The greens ran true with some fair breaks that are reasonable reads. Fairways rolled more than average due to recent below average rainfall (according to our playing partners, who golf the course with some frequency during the summer months). My son and I played here during the 4th of July week on Tuesday, July 1st. Booked through the golf course the day before (631-668-1234). Tee times were limited, but we teed off at 9:40 AM. The winds were at about 12-15 mph, but seemed stronger. They came into play on almost every hole. The couple with whom we were teamed up stated that the winds on Montauk Downs vary quite a bit. We had fun. I would return here again, given the opportunity. The staff was amicable. Prices are very reasonable if you are a NY resident. Clubhouse is well stocked with golf merchandise. Snack prices a bit high, but maybe not, considering the nature of the tourists in this region of NY. There was a refreshment cart available during our round. Play was slow (as to be expected at this time of the year). We waited on about 65% of our shots. Practice green is very nice. Driving range is below average with matts.
If you are a golfer don't miss this course. In season it's difficult to get tee times but well worth the hassle. A great experience. Not the prettiest course but challenging holes that require shot making proficiency.
High handicapper here based on lack of play but do enjoy my business rounds and let's just say anyone who plays montauk downes will not be disappointed. It is scenic ( can Definetly see ocean in some spots) challenging ( ball runs like a Links course) and well kept. This is the same management as beg page black and well worth the money. Play and enjoy. Just don't expect to score well!
Our visit to Montauk Downs was enjoyable, check in was quick, the course was well maintained and the views were stunning.
I have played a number of the golf courses in the NYS State Park System, and outside of Bethpage, this is better than any of them. They run a first class operation at a beautiful and challenging track. The ocean is not readily apparent (you can catch a glimpse from one tee box on a clear day) but it is close enough that the wind off the ocean plays a factor on almost every hole. It was built in 1968 by Robert Trent Jones Sr and his son, Rees, and is one of my favorite RTJ courses. The staff is friendly and efficient, and they keep the course in immaculate shape. The Pro Shop is as good as any, offering a wide variety of clubs, balls accessories and apparel. The Price on a holiday weekend was a reasonable $55 (NYS resident) Montauk downs also has a Pool, and Tennis Facilities however I did not use them
My husband plays here every year and loves it. There is a pool and food area to the side of it. It is a pleasant place to play but does get crowded. Book early to avoid the crowds or being turned away.
Challenging course in good shape, thanks to huge efforts by pro Kevin and greenskeeper Charlie. Trent Jones classic, but avoid the slow pay in August.
this golf course is great because of the way it is laid out. this is a mature course with full grown trees and beautiful fairways. I appreciate these older golf tracks because they have a certain character and history that lacks in the newer tracks of today. each hole is unique and offers the player a different challenge that golfers of every caliber can appreciate. I have played this course many times and I never tire of it and the greens are immaculately maintained as is the rest of the course. Montauk Downs was originally built by Carl Fisher in the 20's for the guests of his luxury hotel and yacht club and when you walk down these fairways you can see how well thought out this course was. next time you visit Montauk and would like to play and walk down the same fairways that Jones,Hagen, Farrell, and Sarazen played then pay a visit to Montauk Downs, you wont be sorry.
