Visited over Thanksgiving and the gallery is something else. Open space, high ceilings, large colorful, exciting art....I had a great time. As luck would have it they were having a black friday sale and I had to take advantage. Now I own my first contemporary piece...Happy Christmas for me! Donna, the artist spent so much time with me so she could guide me in color and content choice for my home office. Could not have been nicer. Highly recommend.
New Paltz has several great sights: an outstanding example is DM Weil gallery and (when the artist's studio is open - weekends only) the next-door studio. All this without the SoHo attitude. Ken is a most gracious and loquacious host.
Gallery of DM Weil ISO excellent! Is comparable to gallery found in Chelsqea, Soho or Midtown New York. Well worth a visit.O
Firstly, Donna & Ken are amazing people. I have never seen such colorful and interesting pieces. We loved every piece in her gallery!!!!! We purchased a special piece and we are thrilled! We will return. -Randi & JimNew City, NY
Visited this gallery for a second time recently during an artist tour of the area. Just like the first visit Donna (the artist) and Ken (manager) were accommodating and generous with their time. New pieces were being displayed on the walls and easels and I was even able to see pieces stored away if I requested them....which I did. If you find yourself in the Hudson Valley you should do yourself a favor and pay this gallery a visit.
When you pull up to DM Weil Gallery the building is so unassuming that you have no idea the surprises that await you inside,. The first room is a sampling of prints in alternate sizes and even some snacks which Ken invites you to enjoy. Then you enter the gallery.. a tremendous room with beautifully displayed abstract art. There is a baby grand piano with music being played to add to the mood. It's interesting having the artist ( Donna ) right there to answer any questions you might have and/or to listen to her tell the origin of a specific painting. How often do we have a painting in our home where we actually have met the artist and know the story behind the work of art. There is no pressure here to buy a painting..although I did.. I did because I definitely wanted a few of them in my home. Donna offers many different sized prints of her originals to fit your home and your budget. If you are in New Paltz I would definitely recommend going to visit.. I would even recommend going if you are not in New Paltz..:-) absolutely worth the trip..L. Miller
The gallery is inviting and spacious. The artwork is vivid with life and color; it is easy to find yourself lost in thought. The interior space oozes creativity and is bristling with unique furniture and styling that complements the gallery's atmosphere. When one walks into the large, open display room, he is immediately intrigued: large windows, strategic lighting, and a beautiful piano inspire you to explore the space. Donna, the artist, is very personable and offers a variety of frames/sizes. The gallery is undoubtedly worth visiting.
My wife and I had of the best days we've had in awhile visiting the DM Weil Gallery. Perfect atmosphere and lots of beautiful pieces to enjoy. Definitely worth a trip if you haven't been already.
There is a joy and playfulness in these paintings with bright colors and a real sense of movement. If the paintings are too costly or large for you, excellent prints are available as well as giclee ones. The gallery has two rooms, prints in one and the other a very large room with the paintings. Do check on their website for hours since it is not always open.
The studio is full of large colorful abstracts. The paintings and their stories are powerfully presented and the artist was there to describe the inspiration and creative process. The originals are much too large for my space, but the studio offers reproductions in a variety of sizes and finishes. I brought home an "enhanced" giclee and some smaller prints. They looks marvelous in my home.
Large, colorful abstracts - Tsunami, Eruption, Sea Dreams, The Big Bang and Flying Machine - fascinated me as a Science teacher. Bold painted images of autumn fields in oranges and yellows evoked the beauty of this time of year and unique, abstract twists on the natural setting in which this world-class gallery and fine print shop are a surprise, both isolated and inviting, surrounded by the hills and ridges of the Hudson Valley. Donna Weil from the Bronx, and her partner and archivist/printer, Ken from Manchester, GB, run the impressively spacious D. M. Weill Gallery, set up like a room in a Manhattan fine art museum. Works of modern art themselves, couches, chairs and divans, and a stylish wine bar punctuate the perimeter of a huge display space for Donna's over-sized canvases. A turn-of-the-(previous)-century grand piano at the far corner suggests the possible use of the space for full-scale cultural events and galas. A large screen runs a continual slide show of her entire body of work to extend the pleasure of viewing the two dozen or so works on the walls, and share pieces already sold to private collectors. Title signs for the displayed pieces include anecdotes of content, process and artistic philosophy; they are emotive, often humorous, and provide a delightful opportunity for identification and/or involvement with each piece - enjoyable for art appreciators already fond of abstract art, and a winning invitation to persuade those who are suspicious, reluctant or inexperienced to give over to enjoyment of the various themes amid the blatant onslaught of color and design. If my enthusiasm seems over-the-top, I assure you, as someone who did not intend to make this stop on the tour, that I am so glad I did. I have a small print of one of the "What's Up" dialogue, male/female relationship pieces that I found so poignantly whimsical; When the World Comes Between Us, and Over the Garden Fence are worth a long look as they speak to inter-personal relationships we all experience. Then turn the corner to revel in Fiesta and fall in love with the little creature in Duck Pond.Additional displays relate details of Donna Weil's involvement with a humanitarian foundation in Ethiopia, and her NYC home in a "green living" condominium. Talking with her about her work and range of experiences was a highlight of the final day of the Gardiner Open Studio Tour on Columbus Day Monday.
