What a wonderful place for children! We visited with our 7 year old and 3 year old. Both loved the place. The close to 3 hours we spent there was well worth the one hour trip from home. All exhibits and activities were working and in good condition. The instructors were very helpful/friendly and patient with the kids, helping them with various projects (they loved the marshmallow and toothpick geometric forms projects). There is nothing bad to say about this place. We were also happy to see that the front door is kept locked for security as there are little ones running about. The place is deceptively small in appearance but packs a lot of learning/fun activities into the space. We've been to the much larger (and much more expensive) Children's Museum in Garden City with the kids and they enjoyed this little gem in Port Jefferson much more. Even the bathroom was immaculate (and there was lots of use of it by both adults and little ones). Kudos to the people who established the Maritime Explorium and those who run it! NOTE: If you live on Long Island and belong to your local public library be aware that, as of this writing, many of them have passes that will get you and the kids in here FREE!!
This is a great spot for families looking for something to do on the weekends. Educational and fun both you and your children will enjoy and what a great location right on the waterfront.
This is a small but fun and entertaining facility. What I don't understand is why they charge for adults. It is a facility for children. It is frustrating that what could be a economical day out for the kids turns pricey when the adults have to pay to accompany their kids into the "museum". I bet there would be more families visiting if it was not for this.
A decent way to while away a few hours of Port Jefferson afternoon, but most pieces are not quite right. The fingerprint exhibit used body paint instead of ink which didn't allow fingerprints to show properly. The sailboat exhibit was clever but was damaged so didnt demonstrate the principles. The knot section would be good except that none of the staff knew how to tie knots. The marshmallow and toothpick project worked fine.
There is a lot to do there for young kids. Young kids are always helped there and have a lot of fun.
We live in that area. Met my son, daughter-in-law and three grandchildren ages 2 1/2 thru 9 1/2 at the picnic benches outside the Maritime Explorium. The boys played catch, lots of space for a 2 1/2 year old to explore, and in warmer weather you can make use of the sprinklers. My son walked over to a local restaurant (PACES) and brought back dinner for the adults and Mexican wraps from SALSA SALSA for the kids. For dess ert we walked over to THE FRIGATE and nobody was disappointed. I treated myself to a Brooklyn Egg Cream for 50 cents and chocolate/peanut butter fudge. I know it will get very crowded with the warmer weather, but we will definitely go back. We have explored the Maritime Explorium which is educational for adults and children.
Great Sunday afternoon for all three kids, ages 5, 8 & 10. Exhibits were interesting even to Mom and Dad.
