We had a chance to sail on Tevake last September. It was a wonderful time. Bethany took us out for a half-day of sailing. Her pride of Bailey Island made the trip even better.Highly recommended.
We had a ball with Tevake Sailing Charters. The crew made us feel like old friends taking the boat out for a sail. They even gave us friendship bread and sliced apples. If you'd like to see Bailey Island from a beautiful sailing ship, definitely call these guys up. We did the sunset sail and had a wonderful time. We will definitely go out with them again.
Our Innkeepers at James Place Inn in Freeport, ME suggested this and we are very grateful they did as we had an awesome time. Both Captain Perry and Captain Bethany provided us with a wonderful, relaxing and informative sail on their 70’ windjammer ALERT.I helped set the sails and was surprised how heavy the mainsail is. But it was a treat to be able to help and Bethany gave me an introduction to the correct terms for the various parts of their sailboat. Perry treated us to a wonderful sail on an overcast Sunday morning. The views are scenic and I was astounded by the number of lobster buoys in the water. These two captains are well regarded by the sailing and fishing community, including the local yacht club who conched them which they returned in full. Fun! And they were greeted by all they passed. Never having been on a sailboat of any kind before I was pleasantly surprised how calm and peaceful it was. Just the wind and water sounds and the sails flapping against the masts. And of course the super conversation we enjoyed with both of them. And the Amish bread they surprised us with was excellent. What a wonderful ending to a five day trip to Maine.
Beautiful experience. If not for the courage of the friendly crew the Tevake would be lost....oops, I mean, less fun. Great people.
Just spent a fabulous evening on the Alert for a 3 hour sunset/full moon sail with Bethany and Perry. You immediately feel welcome and enjoy their sailing experience and knowledge of the area. Although the winds were light, the windjammer offered a great experience and beautiful views around Casco Bay. Definitely put this on your "must do" list!
What better way to spend four hours of a summer afternoon in Maine than sailing off Bailey Island, ME on a 70 foot windjammer? Captain Perry was entertaining with his stories of sailing, sharing his knowledge of the different sailing ships in Maine and the area around Casco Bay. Deck hand Doreen was equally interesting to talk to about the local area. Very relaxing even when the wind decided to blow intermittently. His mother-in-law's Amish breads hit the spot and were wonderful shared with all on board. Three porpoises swam around the boat throughout the cruise, adding to the charm. Well worth doing this again as part of the summer celebration tradition.
Our four hour sailing in and around Bailey Island was a delight. Bethany is a great host and captain. The views, the tacking, the fog, the fun were all in abundance. This is highly recommended!
My mom and I booked the four hour afternoon sail on the schooner, Alert. On a beautiful July afternoon we set off from Cook's Lobster Pound. The owners, Bethany and Perry, were very knowledgeable about the area and entertaining as well (all while sailing AND taking care of their 14 month old daughter, Margaret)! We tacked back and forth while learning about the area and when I asked if they had seen any seals, Bethany made sure we went past an island where they had seen seals in the past and ...there they were, sunning on the rocks! After that, one popped out of the surf off the boat which was quickly pointed out.Just when we thought things couldn't get better, Bethany brought around snacks which consisted of two different quickbreads and sliced apples, homemade by her mother. Deliciious! What a relaxing and fun way to see the area!!We highly recommend Tevake Sailing Charter!
Bethany and Perry, co-captains of Tevake and their larger sailboat, Alert, are such gracious hosts! I had the pleasure of joining them late this summer for a sunset cruise. Their seamanship skills were evident, but seamless in the interaction with their guests. I also had the pleasure of meeting and interacting with their new daughter of about 4 months old. She definitely has her 'sea legs' already. You are welcome to bring your own repast to enjoy, although they do provide water and soft drinks. I brought some homemade chocolate ice cream to share with them and the other guests. If arranged in advance, Bethany and Perry would provide you a lobster feast to enjoy as well. The atmosphere is calm, laid back and soothing. No engine sounds, no crowds; just the sound of the water against the hull and the nature all around us. Birds, fish, seals, and even a porpoise or two!The expense was unexpectedly very low, and I, in fact, wrote my check for quite a bit more than required because the experience was so wonderful. If you'd like to experience the coast of Maine at its best, I could not think of a better way than Tevake! I highly recommend these terrific folks and what they offer to the public.
We had a fabulous half day sail with Perry while we were in the area, that was informative and relaxing. Perry is a well seasoned captain, who knows what he is doing, is very personable, and also willing to share his knowledge of the area and sailing in general. We ended up on the Teyake, which is their smaller ship, with just the two of us, which turned out to be a really nice private sail. We were able to relax and while we weren't flying along, since the wind was being finicky, we had a good time and enjoyed the views and watching Perry change the sails from side to side. I had booked the trip through Bethany, via email, and she was also very personable and friendly. They just added a larger ship as well, so they can take more people out, but I recommend if you have a smaller group (6 or less) opt for the smaller ship, it's much more personal and a lot of fun. We had a great time and would definitely recommend anyone in the area go out with them and have a nice relaxing sail, whether 2, 4 hours or all day, well worth it!
Captains Bethany and Perry have, between them, many years of windjammer experience. It shows in their teamwork. We did three separate charters with them in September on the Alert.Great sailing ship and great stories of the Down East windjammers. Best possible cruise at a very reasonable price. They are a wonderful couple and time with them is well spent!
OK so Perry rocks, awesome Captain - Now the review....Boat was safe, clean, well maintained, and on time. The Tevake offered a unique sailing experience unlike the sheeple cruises one might find in Portland, Boothbay, Key West, Annapolis or other coastal vacation getaways. Folks this was a sweet sail and the real deal. We had average wind but since it kept shifting Perry was working overtime managing different sails and that gave me a great opportunity to study the way a sailboat works. Perry is well informed and generously shared his knowledge of the seas, the boats' operation and local interests such as coastline sightseeing, wildlife and the local lobstermans' trades. In 2014 Perry and Bethany will be adding a vessel to the fleet and I will definitely be back on Bailey Island to cruise on the ALERT; a 56' two masted gaff rigged schooner. Yes I texted Bethany for that info LOL. The Coast Guard were to approve it the day we enjoyed our sail with Perry. IF Perry and Bethany read this someday -- guys we had a great time thanks very much!! Also the butterscotch chip friendship bread was DELICIOUS!! thanks guys, hope to see you in a year or two.Justin & Sheri HuffmanPittsburgh, PA
Okay. I know you, like me, are trying to squeeze in everything that Baileys & Orr's Islands have to offer these last few days of summer vacation. This is worth the price...and breath of fresh air and sea breeze. What ever you can afford in time and or money. Skip dinner. Pack a PB&J and just go sailing with Perry, Bethany and crew. Enough said. Oh, by the way. We are visiting again this fall and planning on a fall foliage tour. Why not?
Fabulous sunset cruise on the Alert. Bethany and Perry were wonderful hosts and even brought out the "cannon" to celebrate a gorgeous sunset. It was an evening that will be remembered fondly for a long time.
We booked an all day sailing charter with Bethany and Perry, expecting to go out on the Tevake - when we arrived, they had the 56-foot Schooner Alert all ready to go! What a beautiful sailing vessel that is!! You could tell how impressive she looked by the reactions of the other boaters. It was a gray, windy day, which turned out to be the perfect weather to sail in and around the islands, and over to Portland and back. My husband was in heaven helping to hoist the sails and then steering the schooner as we sailed back to Bailey Island from our 6 hour tour. Lots of great stories, movie lines, and even some impressions. It was also fun having the bubbly, happy baby on board! We would highly recommend Bethany and Perry for your sailing adventures.
