I have been to this museum at least twenty times! It is too much fun!! Lots of interactive displays, a quiet Good Night Moon room to take a breather in, water to splash in, sand to dig in... It's a great place!
it is fun and interactive and the kids love it the first and second time. I assure regardless of how many times you have been with the kids they will find something to do! I love taking them but they stop wanting go because as they stated to me " it is not that fun anymore".
My kids love this place. I appreciate that this place is available in our community. There's lots to do and see. I would, however, recommend you bring some hand wipes, as its not necessarily the cleanest place. Also, some of the exhibits have been removed or half-replaced, so be mindful of that. Despite this, my kids really enjoy visiting.
Contains many interactive displays that are sure to entertain even the hardest to please of children. You will find everything from a sand pit where the kids can hunt for fossils, to hands-on paper making, to a mock kitchen complete with plates and plastic foods for the kids to "prepare" and "serve". The only downside is that the only food or drinks available are from a couple of vending machines. Kids get fussy and disinterested when hungry and thirsty, and this seemed to be the only limiting factor on how long we spent there. The kids had a blast, and the displays provided ample opportunity for learning and quality family time. Will definitely go back....but next time we will be sure to eat first.
We loved going to this place, it roomy and has a variety of different things for the children to do. The staff is pleasant. Plan on going again soon.
We've been to the Maine Discovery Museum quite a few times and my kids love it each time. They are getting older now and still ask to go there. A great attraction in Bangor.
I have been looking into different activities for my 2yr old daughter and myself in the Central Maine region. Found the Maine Discovery Museum from a net search and decided to give it a try today. Hour drive and $15 later and I think I had nearly as much fun as she did! Some of the detractors are correct, MDM is not really geared toward very small children. Some of the exhibits are rather tall for short legs, and the information stations are printed in fairly small, complex language. That said, there's enough for little hands to touch, hold and play with. The second floor seemed to be my daughters favorite, as I could hardly draw her away from the restaurant and ship exhibit. The Nature Trail exhibit (ground floor) was my favorite as it did a fairly good job showing the different habitats and some of Maine's most noteable animals. The interactive beaver house was especially interesting to me and she had a ball crawling around and thru the beaver house. She even got me to crawl around (a terrible sight to be seen, I'm sure).Bottom line: MDM may not be for very small (under 2-3) or older children (teens), who may get bored, but it's certainly a worth while visit for kids and can help jump-start an interest in science.
We took my niece and nephew to the museum recently and they both had a great time! The live animal interaction was their favorite part!
This is a great place to spend some time, rain or shine! Exhibits are well planned for enjoyment by all ages, and my grandkids just love them all. I think it's amazing that each and every time we visit, they enjoy each exhibit in a different way, on a different scale according to their own personal development! Oh, and the wonderful educational programs.... they are fabulous, and most are included with admission. Messy art is a favorite. :) The Museum also has school vacation camps, summer camps, and frequent special offerings. Thank you, MDM, for all you do for my family!!!
We had a fabulous trip to the Maine Discovery Museum. There is such a variety of exhibits and all of them appeal to multiple age groups. We have been here many times and every time there are different programs and special things to do. On our trip this past weekend there was a special tea party with a performance from a local ballet company! I would recommend it for anyone!
We went for an afternoon with our 18 month old daughter. The museum was closing an hour early- their hours are already severely limited. The museum itself is nice but NOTHING works, there are out of order stickers over half of the attractions. The staff offers no explanations or even a sorry for the lack of working attractions... There's not even a sign out front that indicate that everything is broken. Such a waste of 37.00... Save your money.
Fun place to stop for kids. If you plan ahead they can partake in fun activities. Admission in pricy for what you get. Located right by downtown shopping for the adults
I really enjoyed taking my kids here. We've even made it a family tradition to visit a museum once a month and this is by far their favorite! Try and take one of the classes. They're lots of fun!
I love the MDM - the place never loses its charm for my daughter and we go at least once per week. We enjoy the exhibits and it's great to see her discover new areas to love as she gets older. Don't miss the special classes, like messy art (a favorite). They're free with your day pass or membership and are such a good time. And the animals are great as well. I always have a great time at the MDM, almost as much as my daughter does.
I took my 7 year old grandson to the museum after we participated in a cancer walk in August. He wasn't sure if he wanted to go to a museum but once we got there I had a hard time getting him to leave! He loved the tree house, the water tables and the Dino dig. We will be going back and bringing his younger siblings.
