I discovered this amazing bakery just this week, and was totally blown away by the range and quality of the breads.I bought :Apple CinnamonBrown Sugar Cinnamon Swirl (gooey centre and delicious as French Toast)Mango, Pineapple, Raisin, toasted Sesame amd GingerOrange, toasted Walnut and CranberrySundried Tomato with fresh Basil (this is divine with the Garlic and Roasted Red Pepper Jelly I bought at the bakery too)This is the best bakery I have come across anywhere in the world.I wish I had known about it on my previous visits to Maine.
Amazing breads. We attended a tasting of their breads and cakes in Freeport and were hooked. Bought several and froze them when we returned home. They were great when we thawed and shared with family. They also have an online site and ship. This is a must see and try. They have several locations. Check they out. You will not be disappointed. LOVED IT !!!
Met them at market in Boston... Visited their home bakery and glad we did. Nice people, great bread. Keep baking! Delish.
This is one of our must visit places in Maine. They have a large variety of artisian bread, olive oil, jam, and spread. They also offer tasting on most of their bread, olive oil and jam in store. Yes, they do ship their bread and they are available to order online, but nothing compares to tasting and smelling there delicious bread in their stores.
This is one great bakery. Best bread!!! They let you sample just about every variety of loaf they have available and will even cut another loaf so you can have a taste test. Around $6 per loaf but worth every penny. Friendly staff, too. Kittery ME store is also fabulous and has a restaurant next door... good pizza!
Pigs Fly bread comes in many "flavors" that include blueberry, cinnamon, and many other varieties. At the Freeport store, the bread is also Kosher
We decided to stop by this bakery based on reviews we read on Trip Advisory. It's right along the way if you're headed towards the LL Bean flagship store and are coming from Portland ME. It was a great stop for us. We were able to sample at least a half dozen of the breads that they had baked that day. It is the best bread we have had. We purchased the sourdough, a chocolate bread and a bread that had garlic and sundered tomatoes. All were very delicious. They do have a slicer and sliced the loaves for us. Prices are very reasonable - $4-$6 for homemade artisan bread is a good deal considering Great Harvest is now charging nearly $7 for a loaf of bread. When Pigs Fly makes Great Harvest bread now seem just average to me...I also happened to buy a bag of the Falafel chips and guess what. Best chips I ever ate! I have not seen these chips anywhere (not at Whole Foods or at PCC, the co-op that we have near our house in WA). I need to source these out and find out where I can purchase these from (aside from heading back to ME!).Definitely stop in and check this bakery out.
This place is great! There are free samples of all kinds of breads and cookies. I was not able to bring a loaf home with me since I was flying, but they have a web site where you can order their baked goods. I can't wait to order the cinnamon raisin loaf. The lemon blueberry cookie was deelish! The people in the bakery are friendly and helpful. Don't miss it.
My husband visited the Freeport store in October 2012 and the Kittery store this past weekend. Their bread is simply incredible. They have tons of different bread flavors to choose from; my personal favorite is the hummus bread. They offer samples as well as complimentary bread slicing. Prices seem to range between $4-$6 per loaf depending on the flavor. Some loaves are quite large- one loaf we picked didn't even fit in the bag! For the price you're getting such a quality product- I definitely recommend it to anyone!
Bakery was on our to do list before coming to Freeport due to great reviews. Samples made it very easy to try some bread, oil or spreads. Chocolate bread is my favorite, didn't sound like a great idea but I was wrong. Very helpful gentleman helped us pick out a couple loafs to bring home.
You know when you are hungry but not that hungry or you are in a rush? Well, if you are in Freeport, stop here and grab a loaf. You can even taste test before you buy. Prices for this type of bread are very reasonable, so with some spread you are all set. Great idea in the summer when you want to soak up some rays and just watch the people go by in downtown.
This is the place to go for a great selection of freshly baked breads. They have a table where you can sample several different kinds of breads. Their chocolate bread is a great choice for someone that loves chocolate. It is like eating a decadent chocolate dessert! Other bread options include sourdough, rye, low carb whole wheat as well as many others. They also sell several different kinds of cookies and bread puddings as well as infused olive oils and preserves.
It's worth it. I just enjoyed some grilled cheese using two different breads purchased a few days ago. We'll be sorry when it's all gone! If we lived in Maine, we'd make sure to frequent one of the four or five stores that they own. If you like your bread, then there's no better choice than this bakery...When Pigs Fly rocks!
If you have memories from years gone by of visiting your local hometown bakery for fresh, home-made breads--or, of impatiently sitting at your grandmother's kitchen table, salivating with knife and butter ready, just waiting (it seemed forever) for her oven door to open--to enjoy the baked loaf inside--then, you must visit the "When Pigs Fly Bakery"--here in Freeport! Those bread memories you have will become reality again. You will have arrived at Maine's piece of Bread Heaven! We are locals to this bakery. Each time we visit, we start by tasting morsels from the bakery's ample sampling table, and, then consume 1/2 of our purchased loaf before returning to our car home. It's the reason why we always buy two loaves each week, instead of one.The bakery is a small shop. However, when you walk in, you will immediately notice loaves of more than 20+ types of freshly made, extraordinarily flavorful, crusty classic and artisan breads. Be sure to buy butter before your visit--and, have a couple of plastic knives ready in your car as well. Having hot coffee or tea waiting, too, is another plus. Because I must tell you--you literally cannot stop yourself from having more than one slice of any breads this bakery sells! They are that GOOD!Wrap your mind around these varieties: Chocolate (yes, chocolate--toasted, with raspberry jam--outrageous!), 6-Grain & Pumpkin Seed bread, TRUE, I mean TRUE, Baby Spinach ONION & GARLIC Ciabatta, Apple Cinnamon (Yikes), Mango/Pineapple/Raisin/Sesame/Ginger (a marvelous sweet taste), and, my favorite, Lemon Rosemary. The bakery also sells herb-infused dipping oils, cookies and cakes, some clothing and other items. Visit their website to see all that this bakery offers. When visiting its website, you'll notice that "When Pigs Fly" has several locations in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and, Maine. However, when visiting Freeport, ME, do make this bakery one of your first stops. Coming from the south/Portland area, you'll be traveling north on Rte #1 (which, when arriving in Freeport, Rte #1 becomes its Main St.). After crossing up and over a small bridge, you'll immediately notice a fire station on your right. That's your landmark, look to your left and you will quickly see this bakery's sign. Parking might be somewhat challenging, although you may find a space right on Main St. At this location, you would be just entering Freeport's downtown area, but, also, 3-4 blocks away from the town's center and its numerous free (and, convenient) parking lots. Why the name "When Pigs Fly"? The owner explains that when he had the idea to start his business, his business plan was met by many with a "snowball's chance in hell" prediction. Thank goodness that this owner did not listen to his critics! He's given Maine (and, her lucky tourists) a blessed gift of truly good tasting breads--enough varieties to please every taste and palate!
We come from a large city with a wide selection of bakeries, but none that we've tried so far even comes close to When Pigs Fly! The breads are just plain delicious......interesting combinations of ingredients and a substantive texture that avoids being dry. We brought several freshly baked loaves home, and they did well in the freezer. I used the bread each morning for breakfast, and it was so yummy that I could skip my usual topping of butter. And the sourdough rolls were out of this world! I stuck them under the broiler with a bit of butter and garlic powder......perfect to accompany spaghetti! My husband already asked me to order more of these on their online store. I only wish that we lived closer to one of the Pigs Fly branches!
