skowhegan history house museum

this house has everything you want to know about Skowhegan, Maine. Mel knows all everything you want to know. He will let you handle certain pieces and tell you what they were used for. I think they are closed for the winter but opens up in May.

We stopped in on the last day of the season (Saturday of Columbus Day weekend). The signs in the town to the museum are a little confusing. There is only parking for 3 cars on the side of the road.We were given an excellent tour. Interesting look into the early history of Maine. Special exhibit on logging was very interesting.

We enjoyed our morning visit to this museum before getting on the road again. It's an intriguing look at earlier times. We were fortunate to get a tour from, if I recall correctly, the president of the association that runs it. He was very knowledgeable and informative. This museum is well worth the hour or so needed to fairly thoroughly explore it. There's no fee, but there is a suggested $10 contribution to the association. Well worth it.

Well-organized home representative of Skowhegan in the mid-1800's, even the gardens are superb examples of period plantings with emphasis on the native plants. Attached is a wing devoted to historical records and more memorablia. Much Civil War stuff. The curators are busy archiving the treasure trove of documents, letters, items, etc., stored in drawers and boxes. the computerization of the records is on-going and will be a valuable resouce. Grew up with this place but for the past 20 years or so there has been a concerted conservatorship effort to catalog all, and display more effectively. There is so much here that it can be rotating displays.
