Where do I start this review? Lets put it like this. Course was fun and we all really enjoyed that part. The clubhouse and staff on the other hand, not so much. No bar access. Lunch on stale bread, staff that really did not care and one of the staff actually tried a piece of stale bread. Why who knows but really? These people should be ashamed of themselves for treating the 9 golfers we brought to the course the way they did. I was shocked they didnt offer to give us the lunch or a free round after they pulled this stunt. I guess some places dont care about hospitality and this one takes it.

I've played Sable Oaks several times during previous visits to southern Maine and enjoyed the experience every time. Although the course is not long (6359 from the tips), it demands accuracy and precision to keep big numbers off the card. It was carved from wooded and hilly terrain and provides a variety of challenges: many tight fairways, several forced carries over waste and marshy areas, blind shots, plenty of sand - there's even a river running through it! Today was especially enjoyable. Teed off just before 7, passed through a foursome on 14 and didn't see another person on the course. Finished in 2:45 - my kind of golf! Fairways and tee boxes were in great shape in early July. Greens were ok, but most seemed to have been overcome by a spiral weed infestation that has supplanted a lot of the grass. My quibbles: no senior player rates; no driving range (tho' there are two hitting mats with nets east of the clubhouse); no food/beverage cart service. My take? Play Sable Oaks and see if you are up to the challenge.

Had a foursome go there for 18 holes and played there on Sunday. 6/14/2013. It took us 3 hrs and 45 mins to finish 9 holes. For what is supposed to be a premier golf course, there wasn't a starter controlling the start . At the club house we were informed that it was 'cart path only' on the course.... these 9 holes were the slowest i have ever encountered. We has a twosome come up behind us and we let them play through, . then we has another twosome come up and we let them play through. Then we noticed that there were 3 more twosomes behind us still, we decided that if the management did not feel a need to couple them into foursomes, then we did not feel a need to allow them to play through. I did not see any reason for the course 'cart path only' rule and with the ridiculous amount of time to play nine, we left after nine. I would never go back to this course again with their 'cart path only' and total lack of management effort to speed up play. That said.. the course was in great shape.

The meal was fine but the service was slow slow slow. An hour and a half from start to finish. The waitress just disappeared and we finally went to find her!

I have played this course 10-12 times and when I finish I always have the same thought...this is not a difficult course, but I seem to make it one. There are some deep valleys you need to be aware ofwhen hitting your second shot to an appealing open green and low and behold the ball is in the valley. Drive down the fairway and check out the green unless you are playing with a local. On some narrow holes a 3 wood will save you a stroke as the trees line both sides. The par threes are very fair and there are a few holes where you can open up and let it fly. I played this course late last summer and it was in very good shape. Watch for the specials they offer from time to time. Playing time was four hours mid-week.

Found the golf course to be challenging yet fun. You get a chance to use every aspect of your game. Course was in really good condition with an accessible club house. I did have one issue. I unknowingly drove my cart across the fairway on a day when carts were to stay on the cart path only. I was hollered at by an "assistant manager" who happened to be golfing on the same day. Not only was I embarrassed in front of my co-workers and boss, I was told that I would be thrown out if it happened again. Was not exactly greeted warmly by staff first thing in the morning either.

I've played almost every course in Greater Portland, and Sable Oaks is notoriously one of the more difficult. They do a good job keeping it in shape, and the clubhouse bar has good sandwiches and an okay beer selection. The course will have you use every club in your bag, and if you don't hit it straight, every ball you bring! Long story short, if you're up for a challenge, give it a shot. If you're looking to hack, you can find better places in the area to play.

Some great holes on this course. The course will punish you if you don't hit the fairways. Take advantage of the easier holes because especially on the front nine because there are some virtually impossible holes on the back nine.

Narrow fairways and when you hit it into the rough, you almost always must declare it lost. Lots of elevation change, and on many holes, you have to hit over a hazard and uphill, so you can't see your landing point. A pretty little 18-hole near the airport. Staff were friendly and courteous. Practice green but no driving range.
