Just a short drive from downtown Portland. Scenic views and unique (but walkable) breakwater. Nice view of the Portland Headlight and Portland Harbor.
A deceptively attractive lighthouse and surrounding park situated behind a community college near Portland. The light house itself is located at the end of a 900 feet granite rock water break. There are paved walkways with benches and a small beach in the area as well. We came here for sunrise on our first day in Portland and then the next day in the afternoon. Great place to find goldendoodles and labradoodles!
You can walk out to this 1897 Maine lighthouse on the giant stones that make up the breakwater, and you should. Very scenic, a few free parking spots nearby and a great view of the boat traffic sailing into and out of Portland Harbor. It's a short drive from downtown Portland and there's a public bus, Route 21, that runs M-Sa, that stops at SMCC, a five minute walk to the breakwater. The lighthouse is open most weekends June-Sept., ($5) and Columbus Day weekend in Oct. http://springpointlight.org
Once we found a parking spot, it was a nice challenge walking out to the lighthouse. The walk can be done in about ten minutes, just be careful and take your time. Once your at the lighthouse, just relax and enjoy the views.
It was pretty windy, so we didn't stay too long. The scenery is beautiful though. On a summer day it would have been perfect.
The volunteers that guide you know all the lighthouse history. Beautiful views of Casco Bay and Portland. A great jetty walk included.
Sometimes the lighthouse has tours, its fun to do. Parking is iffy, there are other lots but if you pass them you wouldnt know it and then end up at the end near the point.
nice spot, you have to walk along the jetty to get to the lighthouse at the end, an easy walk that gives you a closer view of the fort out in the water.
We boat around the islands near our home in CT and see lots of so-called sparkplug lighthouses (as well as listening to the one on the New Haven breakwater which keeps me up on foggy nights). They are very interesting, but you can't see them without a boat, and even then, you are x-amount of yards away. This is the only existing sparkplug lighthouse where you can walk out on the breakwater. You need to watch your step, but it isn't a long nor difficult walk (except for our dog, whom we carried, because unlike the retriever stepping gingerly ahead of us, this Yorkie wouldn't have made it over the spaces!) Even after all the sparkplugs I've seen, there's something quite different in seeing one this close. The lighthouse is in very good repair (unlike some I have seen) and from that point you can get a nice view, in the distance, of Portland Head Light, the area's diva light station, from her less-photographed side. You reach the lighthouse by going through the campus of the Maine Technical College, so don't think you're going in the wrong direction. Once at the waterfront, you park, and it's a short walk to the breakwater. There is a small gift shop (believe it or not) there, which carries a fair assortment of items, and also has coffee, etc.
This is a small and unique lighthouse. The tour was interesting and was led by a very knowledgeable man. You need to walk about 1/4 mile on a breakwater to get to the lighthouse. The stones have some gaps between them so it is not accessible with a wheelchair or walker. The tour requires climbing up and down on sturdy metal ladders with good handholds, but a very large person might have difficulty on the ladders. There was good attention paid to safety on the tour. The view from the top part of the tour was fantastic.
We visited this light house whilst in the Portland area. It is well worth the short walk along the rocky walkway out to this light house. The tour is great although you have to be able to climb the short ladders to get up in to the lighthouse platform. An internal stairway takes you through two floors to the top. Lots of information on its history with old photos of the light house before the rock walkway was built.
A must see. Tucked in at the end of the road. A beautiful view of Portland and the boats (ships) coming and going. A great hike out to the lighthouse and well worth the 5 dollars to enter if it is open. Nice surrounding area for lunch or dinner. Bakeries also.
We especially enjoy the tour of the lighthouse and hearing about its history. This is a great place to view a very busy harbor and see the many boats and ships that come to visit and work
Whats not to like about going out to a jetty and watching all the sailboats, lobster boats, pleasure boats, tankers, and even cruise ships come into Portland Harbor?? Sooo scenic- can never get enuf of that!
Brought our kids (7 & 2.5) here and they loved it. You really should wear sensible shoes here if you want to walk to the lighthouse: it requires walking across large boulders that aren't connected with mortar. Mt oldest was a bit apprehensive at first, but once he did it, he was hooked. My youngest was the same and insisted crossing some of the boulders on his own. The view is quite gorgeous.
