The town members were buzzing about Appalshop long before I stepped into today. Each local or business owner I talked to said I must stop in and check this place out and I am glad I made the trip. A place created both to preserve the Appalachian heritage and teach the next generation about how to capture such enriching stories, Appalshop is a unique and cultural asset to the community. I was able to interact with some of the interns who range in ages from 15-20, and I could see a strong passion and enthusiasm for media and the culture. Also, the staff were hospitable and took the time to deliver some great information about the history of The Appalshop. If you love any type of art form, this place does a fabulous job of exploiting the regions cultural assets.
Its such a historical place to visit no words to describe it but I do recommend that you go visit this place yourself
I absolutely loved every moment of time I spent in Appalshop. They have a radio show dedicated to good music and public service and an art gallery on the ground floor. No matter what you're doing in Whitesburg, Appalshop is well worth the detour. Plus, if you can't make a physical appearance, you can listen to their programs on air or online!
We recorded our PSA for Entrepreneurship for the Public Good workshop and it was fair enough to say we were treated very well. The studio offers a warmth reception with the best programs I have heard about in a while. One of them is helping prisoners speak to the loved ones and send them messages via the WMMT radio. It was truly nice to see their efforts and cause being implemented.
I love this place. It is super cool. Also, I got to meet an intern who was super friendly and worked patiently with us for our public service announcement. We also go to be on the radio and the gentlemen who spoke was super nice. It was all pretty unplanned for this event too, but they worked with us and it all worked out wonderful. The building is absolutely wonderful. It has an particular calm and quiet atmosphere. It is very comfortable and so interesting. I would recommend making a stop here to visit and look at some of the work they do and they also have museum art.
Attended in June 2012. My favorites were the Ruckers, Shape Note Singing, Old Regular Baptist Singing, the Lee Sexton band, and the flatfoot dancing.
Its a great place to catch some really good shows. Most will represent our region. But may catch shows about our heritage or even woodworking.
Appalshop began as a grass-roots effort to save the Appalachian heritage through archive the music and folklore of the area in video and print. It also advocated conservation of nature in opposition to the destruction of strip mining. It has evolved into a radio station, recording studio, auditorium, and many other facets, still concerned with preservation of all that is good about Appalachia. In early June each year it hosts a "Seedtime on the Cumberland" festival with music, storytelling and crafts.
Appalshop is a non-profit multidisciplinary media, arts and education center based in Whitesburg, Kentucky. We, as interns of EPG program of Berea College went there and explored and interviewed the persons in charge.Beth Bingman, the Managing Director of Applashop, warmly welcomed us and explained us what projects they are doing right now, what is their purpose and a brief history of the shop. The shop is three story building: first floor is like Gallery displaying pictures or drawings by local high school students. On the second floor, they have a small library storing CDs, cassettes, documentary films, shirts, some of them for sale. On the top floor, they have film editing room and some others. We are also very lucky and honored to see and interview of Director and Producer of the movie, Stranger with a Camera, Elizabeth Barret. She is very kind and warm to give us time to interview her. She even talked about how she was involved and inspired to film Stranger with a Camera. One of the significant things while we were there is that we have witnessed the air room, WMMT-FM 88.7. They even agreed to help us to air the announcement of Workshops for Social Media that we are going to hold at KRADD regions. As we are interns of Berea College, they really give time for us and hope that we obtain enough information that we are seeking for.The shop is the right place for both educators and tourists. This is one of the places that you cannot miss while you are in Letcher County, Whitesburg.
