I was one of eleven anglers that pooled our money and booked a two day offshore fishing trip with Capt Mike's son Skipper last October, 2014. Skipper Thierry and his crew of Chad, Mike, and Chris worked diligently and seamlessy to ensure our team experienced a first class fishing adventure. The sea was flat, the air was comfortable, and the bite was on. When the dust had settled, our bounty consisted of more than 1,100 lbs of Yellowfin Tuna averaging 80-100 lbs each, large Mahi, and Wahoo up to 95 lbs. Sure, the weather, sea conditions, and the fish bite are all variables, but the executive treatment that Capt Mike's team provides their customers is always First Class........and second to none! Thank you Mike, Ann, Skipper and crew for all the wonderful fishing memories you have given me and my family and friends over the years.
So there we were, October 2014. The air was perfect, the bait was being loaded in quantity on the boat. We were ready for our epic overnight with Captain Skipper and his crew. The Green Egg looked primed for the meats the passengers were bringing onboard as offerings. And what a trip it was. 11 of us caught over 1000 pounds of fish; so much so that we had to return hours early because we were running short of cooler space. Captain Skipper put it in his top 5 trips of all time. While fishing is not catching, so there are no guarantees, and we have to follow federal law, both facts misunderstood by other negative reviewers, the Captain and crew worked tirelessly to not only get us on the fish, but help us get them in, regardless of some of our physical limitations. Put it simply, we slayed em. And we all came home with huge coolers full of fish. Fishing is always a chance between conditions, weather, and seasons. Captain Mike's is a sure bet. I bet on the house every time and I will continue to do so. Book your business with Captain Mike's. They won't let you down.
11 of us just had the trip of a lifetime! We went out for a overnight tuna trip October 8 2014 and it was amazing. First and foremost the captain and crew " Skipper, Chad, Chris, and Mike" we're all on their game and made sure that we were up to the task at hand. If you think you are above professional instructions you might get your feelings hurt. As a former charter captain, I still got reminders to make sure that all fish got to the boat. These guys are out every day and know what works! Also be prepared to start the trip with a introduction, safety briefing and the appropriate seagoing prayer. We trolled and spotted Mahi-Mahi on the way out, after about 30 crazy minutes of weaving lines to keep 5 or more fish at a time from tangling us up we boated the entire school. We worked around a couple of storms and got caught by a couple" bring rain gear". The storms seemed to raise more fish than discouraging fisherman. As the sun started to get low in the West, we took position up current from the targeted oil rig. As some of us started chumming, chunking, and free lining live baits Chad took the kite to the bow and proceeded to skip a live bait across the top of the water. If you have never had the thrill of watching a 100 lb plus tuna launching out of the water to grab a airborne bait, it is thrilling. We fished in the order we drew earlier to make sure that everyone got a fair turn. After about 5 hours everyone had a yellowfin tuna from 50 to 115 lbs. When you were not on with a yellowfin you had all the time you wanted to jig up black fin tuna up to 20 lbs. around midnight we all packed it in for the night. At 8 berths for the customers you have a good chance of sleeping on the deck in the A/C. Bring a Pad,sleeping bag, and pillow to guarantee a comfortable evening. We started the next morning with trolling from rig to rig on the way back in and were treated to a 85 lb Wahoo! Taking this type of trip requires a couple of things to be a good trip. First is captain and crew, secondly is a group of people that get along and enjoy fishing. Thirdly you need to be prepared with food and drink, clothing for rain and shine, sleeping gear " pillow sleeping bag and a mat", personal hygiene supplies with towel. Lastly you need to be thoughtful to your fellow fishermen and keep the alcohol consumption to a minimum during fishing hours. When you get back to the dock remember that your deck hands work for tips and normal tipping etiquette applies, 15% is normal for good service and should increase as your experience evolves. This is the wild open ocean and fishing does not mean catching, but I can tell you that if there is anything that the captain and crew can do to get you fish they will be doing it. Best regards and bent rods,Phil L.
This was my very first sea fishing trip and I cannot say enough about how wonderful the experience was. The Captain and crew are fun, knowledgeable and such a pleasure to deal with. They do everything possible to make the trip fruitful and enjoyable. I've been on a party boat trip since this and I was VERY disappointed. The personal touch provided by Captain Mike's Crew, makes ALL the difference. Thanks guys!!!
We took our family out fishing with Captain Skipper on the Escape while staying on Dauphin Island. What a great day!! We caught our limit and enjoyed being out on the boat as well. Captain Skipper and Joe were very professional and especially good with our grandkids. We will definitely book with Captain Mike's again when staying on the island. Gary & Patsy
Capt Mike and the entire crew of the Lady Ann did a great job on our last overnight trip.Conditions were tough, but we were encouraged to fish hard and it payed off. I have charter fished throughout the Gulf of Mexico on many different boats and I must say that the experience on the Lady Ann was one of the best I have ever had. Our group is already planning a trip with Capt. Mike for next year.
It,s FISHING! you can't guarantee a limit of fish and you can't catch over the limit. Our company has been fishing with the Thierry family for many years, we always have a great time! If you have 4 to 40 people you can book a private charter, the walk on trips would be fine but obviously you dont take a 65 foot boat out with 4 people on it, if they can't pay for the fuel to take the boat out it makes sense to cancel. Ann Thierry books the trips and you won't talk to a nicer person! Captain Mike and Captain Skipper are as knowledgable as any Captain on the gulf, they are generations of fisherman. We will always go with the Thierry family! We always catch a limit of amberjack and snapper on our 12 hour trip every year
Our company sponsors an employee fishing trip each year and we make plans early to be sure we book with Capt. Mike's crew. We have never had a bad experience. At the beginning they explain how to measure the depth of the line to where the fish are. We caught our limit of red snapper and amberjack, the boat was moved as necessary to find good spots. The crew is amazing; they work tirelessly to be sure everyone catches fish. They bait the hooks, cast the line if you want them to (for us ladies), help reel in the "BIG ONES", take fish off the hook, weigh each fish, bake fish for everyone to enjoy and it is delicious. They even keep the boat unbelievably clean. They never stop doing everything they can to please. We were out from 6:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. and I never saw one of them resting. They even clean the fish and divide them properly.
I have made several trips with Capt. Mike on the Lady Ann with friends and we have almost always limited out on snapper and amberjack, and done well with tuna and other hard to catch species. I think that this is the case because Capt. Mike and his crew never give up. Capt. Mike will move the Lady Ann as often as necessary to find the fish. He and his crew seem tireless. On a bad day, I have been pretty discouraged, but Capt. Mike always found a way to save it, by sheer determination. I have rarely been on a trip with Capt. Mike where the market value of the fish I bring home does not exceed the trip's cost. My group makes at least one, and often two trips a year, and we look forward to every one.
We've been out a couple of times with Capt Mike on overnight trips and have had great experiences both times. First time we did well with snapper and grouper, but the water at the rigs was too green for tuna. This year we slayed the snapper, grouper, black fin, and yellow fin tuna. Great crew and comfortable boat.
First off the boat was a great size for a 2 day offshore trip. I never felt like the boat was not suited for this purpose. The Green Egg was used for cooking some pork shoulders and the galley worked out well. We caught 565 pounds of fish and the deck hands were a big help. We did catch some huge out of season Red Snapper and Amberjack along with plenty of Black Fin tuna and Skamp grouper.
I have been out on offshore trips with my friends on Captain Mike's boat about 15 times. We have always loaded the boat with fish. Last trip (overnight) we caught over 1000 pounds of red snapper, tuna & grouper. The on board accommodations are excellent (air conditioned lounge ,full kitchen, lots space). Equipment is first class. The mates are always knowledgeable, experienced, friendly & helpful. Captain Mike is generally regarded as the best Captain in the northern Gulf of Mexico. The people who complained in their reviews appear to be inexperienced anglers , who don't know what to expect from deep sea fishing. We have had novice anglers on our trips & they have always done very well. I have been deep sea fishing on many, many boats over the years & Capt Mike is THE BEST by far. I have not been out on the second boat with "Skipper", but I have heard many good reports on that boat as well. I would highly recommend Capt Mike to both experienced & novice anglers. If you can't catch fish with Capt Mike, you are not going to catch fish with any Captain.
We put together a group of three different fishing teams and booked the Lady Ann for the Alabama Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo. This was by far one of the best trips I have taken. The crew was absolutely outstanding as well as our two captains. Very professional at all times as well as obviously cared about our success in the rodeo. We had a pretty experienced group with the exception of maybe one angler. This one angler had a great trip and even landed the biggest Yellowfin Tuna of the trip and rodeo. I would recommend to anybody out there. With the challenge of fish limits and such you really need an experienced captain to make the difference. We plan on booking the Lady Ann for next years rodeo as well. We finished 1st in Tuna, 2nd in Blackfin Tuna, 2nd and 3rd in Dolphin and 3rd in Vermillion Snapper. A great trip and a great crew.
I have had the pleasure of fishing with Captain Mike and his crew for several years. I have spent many hours on the sea fishing and have had a wide variety of experiences. 20+ years ago, I started going on a 4 hr trips, and it has progressed to overnight trips and more. My most memorable trips have been with Captain Mike. My first interaction with Captain Mike came 14 years ago, and then I understood what it meant to truly fish off-shore. The captain and his team have always been accommodating and hospitality has always been top on the list. I caught my first billfish with them and plan on my children doing the same. I have and would recommend Captain Mike's Deep Sea Fishing to anyone! They are one of the most respected and well-revered outfits in the region; a true class act that will go above and beyond to make an individuals trip memorable! Here is a brief video link to some of our fishing trips:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4R0Or1ctvnw
After 5 years of consistent annual trips, I can say that if Captain Mike's charter is not sailing, I will not go out. Regardless of whether the Captain is Mike or Skipper, they consistently work hard to put us on the fish for both a single day and multiple day trip. The crew is always professional and courteous and mindful to our needs. The equipment and bait is always plentiful and in good working order. From the booking with Miss Anne through the final cleaning of the fish, Captain Mike's is the best charter company I have ever used. Well worth the cost of the trip to become one of the family.Bruce P Burgess, CEO, Intelligent Therapy Staffing
