The side of the building has all of the flags from the 50 states. Upon entering, be aware that your belongings are checked like the airport. A volunteer named Arnion gave me a map. There are paintings from all previous Alabama governors. The rotunda painted elegantly with real gold

It looks good from the outside but is not as interesting inside. Nevertheless it is clearly worth a visit coupled with the modern office type new State House.Agree that the history conveyed is incomplete and this ought to be addressed.

We have been to more than a dozen state capitols. This one has only a self-guided tour. Its role in the Civil War (other than the large monument and display of CSA flags outside) is not explored. The opposition of its governor(s) to civil rights is utterly ignored. Wow. Even the paintings in the dome are racist. This isn't unusual in old buildings but here there is absolutely NO context provided. C'mon, y'all, let's fess up.

The information sheet provided for the self guided tour was excellent. The capitol is well preserved. Be sure and visit the gift shop.

Not an all day stop since many rooms are closed off but we ended up spending an hour here (along with Jefferson Davis house across the street.) We have a five year old who didn't really care to do much but walk up and down the stairs but still liked walking around seeing the birthplace of The Confederacy. Perhaps after reading other reviews a guided tour would have been more entertaining.

this is quite the impressive facility. again - great deal of history has taken place here. you can actually see the spot where jefferson davis took the oath of office for the c.s.a. (not always good history, but worth remembering). entire area around the capitol is govt. buildings including the former confederate white house. should be on your historical tour if in montgomery

We came in just a couple of minutes late to the tour, so I can not remember our guides name. He is an older African-American gentleman. He reminded me of my Papa.As it was a Saturday we didn't see much, but the building it's self was stunning and beautiful.

Disappointed there was not more attention given to Christmas Decorations--Below Average-- Tree had what, maybe 10 ornaments......

I enjoyed my visit to the Alabama State Capitol. I parked on the south side of the building by the meters (50 cents per 30 minutes). Much of this building is a museum. The old chambers (Senate and House) are well preserved...but the working chambers are located across the street at the Alabama State House (which I also visited). The rotunda is well worth the visit. The inner dome is stunning. There is a beautiful dual spiral staircase near the rotunda that I enjoyed viewing as well. The executive branch of the state government is housed in the building, but that area was off limits to visitors during my visit. The staff were extremely helpful and friendly.

We looked at some of Montgomery's top attractions, such as MLK's church, the Rosa Parks memorial, and the Civil Rights Memorial. Then we strolled over a few blocks over to see the state capitol building. We were flabbergasted to see a bigger-than-life marble statue of Lorleen Wallace, dead center in the entrance lobby. Clearly Montgomery thinks this symbol of their worst history is their finest legacy.

Interesting to walk around the grounds and read about the history of the monuments and get a close up view of the architecture.

This capitol sits on well manicured grounds and is surrounded by elegant white government buildings. It has a dignified architecture and unusual color schemes for a state capitol which makes it quite interesting. The rotunda is a work of art in itself. Well worth visiting.

We did a self-guided tour of this building. It is quite nice inside and has a gift shop with a large array of things to purchase. The grounds are well kept with several statues including Jefferson Davis. There is a huge monument to Confederate forces that was probably erected in the nineteenth century.

My husband and I took the guided tour of the Alabama State Capitol and I highly recommend it. Our tour guide was a wealth of information and stories. The interior of the building has a beautiful rotunda...best picture taking is by laying down on the floor directly below and centered on the rotunda. How do I know that? That's what our guide told us to do...he was right! The twin spiral staircases are also quite impressive. There is a lot of history in this building....not to be missed.
