st. nicholas

This quaint little church, St. Nicholas, is an old wooden structure that is set apart from Juneau's main tourist zone. It is a few blocks off the beaten tourist path (and up a few steep city streets). So, getting there takes a little efforts. Nevertheless, for those who appreciate religious art and architecture, this quaint little church is worth the extra effort. On the last cruise ship of the 2014 season, we still witnessed a steady stream of visitors. The church was not overrun with tourists, but as one couple would leave, another would shortly arrive.

Presently under renovations so not open but worth a quick visit to see the building and have a peek in the windows. Wonderful to see it is being maintained. Simply walk up the hill through the downtown Juneau area and you will arrive.

Lots of scaffolding around the dome and not able to go inside....It was a nice hike up the hill to find this out....but the Catholic chapel next door was nice.

We would have loved to go inside; but, it was being renovated and all we could do was look at the building from the street.

It's uphill all the way, which is not so easy when you're a senior, but the climb is well worth it! I was greeted by a woman manning the gift shop, who led me around to the church's entrance. The church is very beautiful and is an historical gem, dating from 1894. Being a Monday afternoon, I was pleasantly surprised by the number of visitors who came while I was there. This is truly a house of prayer and is the home for Orthodox Christians from many countries. Like so many churches, St. Nicholas exists on contributions, and, while I was not asked to pay anything for admission, I joyfully donated on the way out. I hope all who visit are generous.

Being Orthodox Christians, my wife and I really wanted to see the church. It was a nice walk up the hill through town (maybe a mile from the dock) to get there, and well worth it. Even though the church wasn't open for viewing when we arrived, the priest came out of his house and after a brief conversation let us in. He only asked that we not use flash for photography. It was very peaceful, and we just sat quietly at first. Loved all of the iconography, and signs explaining the history. Really beautiful and worth the walk up the hill.

We found the church had ready access by going around the corner and approaching via the small park. Someone was there with the door open to explain the church's history as desired and to also open the gift shop. It's very ornate and worth the trip up the hill.

We walked the eight blocks from downtown, couldn't find the bus, cloudy and rainy but an interesting walk. The problem was when we got to the church; the closest we got was across the street. There are back hoes and construction workers giving the site a much needed redo. The visitors center downtown did not know about the closure so if you go somewhere in Juneau maybe call for information about open and closing hours. Interesting little church from the outside and an interesting picture with the back hoes and all.

My mom and I love historic sites, especially nosing around old churches. This site is an uphill walk, but worth seeing if history is your cup of tea. They were replacing the foundation while we were there (preservation is good) but we did get to peek inside. A young gentleman came in to give us some context about what se were seeing, and that was great. Glad I went!

We could see the onion dome from the capitol. so we thought we would walk over. It's amazing how small this church is, but there isn't much to see or read, but it is worth a few minutes of your time.

We wanted to go and see this interesting church and piece of Russian heritage but they were closed so we had to pass on this unique church.

This old church is a great way to connect to our Creator. A visit to the chapel connects early Alaska and today's worshippers together in a peaceful atmosphere.

When you arrive by ship, get away from the the touristy stuff and head into town. Juneau isn't much to look at -- "this place is the capital of a state?" I thought. This little octagonal Russian church is certainly nothing you'll see in the rest of the states. And it has some great art from that period.

We boarded directly from our ship, Holland America Volendam, right in the middle of the chandel. The St. Nicholas took us up really close to the glaciers and under a waterfall. Crew was extremely knowledgable and friendly. I'm going to do it again.

I love history and architecture and I accidentally stumbled upon this. I was glad to find it. Its a piece of Russia in the US.They still have church there.
