The story here is fishing and hiking, the historic Iditirod trail goes through here and is worth a visit. The lake is very scenic.
We went Kayaking on bear lake on our family vacation to Alaska, breathtakingly beautiful! We saw tons of Salmon swimming beneath us, a Bald Eagle perched in a nearby tree, all with the backdrop of the forest covered mountains. There were only about 6 houses in view from the lake and once we got far enough out it felt like we were completely alone in nature, which is hard to do where we are from (D.C.). Highly recommend getting out in nature while in Seward but be careful of Bears - we did see some fresh bear droppings so we knew they were around but we didn't see any. Only draw back is you can't fish at the lake - I understand why but it still would have made the trip more enjoyable.
We stayed at a B and b on Bear Lake. Our hostess told us of the salmon project going on in Bear Lake. They monitor and control the number of pairs of salmon introduced into the lake, collecting eggs and reintroducing them to the lake for preservation purposes. The lake is about 2 miles long and you can paddle to a spillway which is full of salmon.
We drove just past Kim's Forest B & B and parked at the edge of Bear Lake. What a great way to spend an afternoon reading, napping in almost complete silence with views of the lake and the glaciers in the background. If you are looking for a place to really unwinde after being on a cruise with thousands of people, this is the perfect place.
