athol history trail

Not a walking trail, more of a self guided driving trail. Scalped by Indians? Yes, that happened here! Athol has a rich history and although now struggles, was was a booming town during the industrial revolution until the Great Hurricane of 1938 demolished the town with widespread damage and flooding, Unfortunately it seems Athol as been unable to rise up to it's former glory. Often under-rated, it is a nature lovers paradise and filled with history. The history trail takes you through several sections of town and while some of the sites are no longer there or houses are built upon the sites, it is a scenic and enjoyable ride. Perfect for a fall foliage trip or summer cruise and while your there, visit the downtown businesses, town beaches and local crafters. Lots of hidden gems here!
