Rocky Woods Reservation is a diamond in the crown of the Trustees of Reservations in Massachusetts. Located in Medfield, my hometown of many years ago, this natural resource has so much to offer to young and old alike. Many scenic and navigable wonderful trails, several picturesque and trout-stocked ponds, great bird watching and lots of photogenic streams, plant growth, and even wild flowers in the spring and summer. Fall is the premier time to spend a day...the foliage can be breathtaking. They rent ouside and covered spaces for functions...recently my brother attended his high school reunion picnic here...during a weekend of activities in Medfield. Lots of sports teams, girl and boy scout troops, etc., have their annual field days here...just perfect. Picnic tables and grills...fields for activities and games...nature all around...Rocky Woods is the perfect place for families, friends, couples, groups of all kinds...a resource which guarantees a fun and wonderful time. Not sure if they still have ice skating on the main pond or if they still have a trout fishing contest, but even if not, it is a rustic and memorable spot just 20 miles or so west of Boston...perfect way to spend the day.
You might want to visit Rocky Woods. There is a variety of terrain here - hills and trails, some that meander by ponds, one with a boardwalk going across it. But, let's face it. From what I hear, before my time there were skating parties that were a gathering spot for town youth and their parents. Now the lake is full of "No Skating or Swimming" signs, which is a bummer. I'd love to have lived here when there were gatherings of people of all ages around the bonfire, when a boy might have taken a girl into the darkness to steal a kiss. There are liability issues here for the Trustees of Reservations, I'm sure, which make it impossible to do this these days. Overall, with the overdevelopment of the area, I'm glad that someone sold or granted this land to the Trustees, and I recently thought, when I was driving by, "Thank God for the Trustees of Reservations for buying up land that otherwise might have been developed." And yes, I do support the Trustees with my membership, plus some. No complaints here, though I gave it 4 stars because there are other places that I find more interesting.
Nice local park with strings of trails through the woods. Many of the walkers have dogs, some not on leash, so watch out....
I take my dog to Rocky Woods several times a week to run & hike. There are a few spots where dogs are supposed to be on-leash, but the majority of trails are open to off-leash running/walking of well mannered dogs. We run into other dogs and people often while there and have never had a problem. Beautiful spot with well marked trails. Great for mountain biking as well.
Very nice conservation area to spend few hours walking; very "New Englandy" feel... Operated by Trustees of Reservation so well maintained.
My husband and I enjoyed a lovely walk here on a beautiful fall day. Just be sure to print up a trail map before you go,in case they are out of maps there --- you will need one! Also, be aware that if you venture onto the black trail, they are not marked with numbers at intersections, and they can head off toward private property. We ran into a couple of nice ladies who had a scary experience with guard dogs.
During the summer and popular days the booth is open and there is an access fee for non-members of the Trustees. Dogs are allowed only if a pass (annual or day) has been granted. Rules are flouted off-season and off-weekend however.
great easy hikes for the family ... including pets.... climb whale rock for lots of exciting views (in the winter mostly). the only thing to remeber is that the trustee organization charges you if you are not a member to get in... $4 per adult (free for kids).
We had a great 3.5 hike and walk. The observation tower was great especially the view of the Boston Skyline. The radio tower is great to see too.
lots of ticks - not that there is much anyone can do about that in Medfield
Year round scenery, trails, and solitude. Another Trustees of Reservations winner!
