What a quaint old building that has been restored. It is of the late Greek Revival style reflecting the latest fashion of the time. This home was where the lock keeper lived with his family to collect the tolls. The canal, of which here was one of the nineteen lock to raise and lower water for the canal boats. was built between Havre de Grace and Wrightsville, PA to carry mostly coal. This ended when the railroads could carry the coal faster and cheaper. An interesting and short video is shown and there is a room where a working model of a lock is demonstrated. Here the volunteer could have done a better job. She kept moving parts but did not show the boat actually going out of the lock.Explanations were weak. Steps naturally going up to the second floor were very steep. Outside is an actual lock and all of this overlooks the Chesapeake Bay. Our group had to pay $3.00 per person because we went on a Wednesday. Weekends are free. I did make reservations with the person in charge.
The Lock House tells the story about the boats using the Susquehanna River, canal and locks. There is free admission 1-5 p.m. April-Nov. on Friday-Sunday. Walk across the bridge that crosses the canal for an incredible "front view" of the lock house and canal. A great place to visit.
