We stopped here on a cycle tour and it was surprisingly picturesque and there were a large amount of flamingoes hanging out in the water. Some really close. A really good place to come and see the wildlife of Bonaire!
Lake Goto(meer) was part of our island tour. We stopped at an overlook for a nice view of the lake. It is a good place for a picnic and enjoy the scenery and wildlife. Our tour continued down the road and around the lake where our driver stopped the bus for a better view of the flamingos. The flamingos we saw were a distance away and we were not allowed out of the bus. So, photos of the flamingos were taken through the bus windows. As a result, I would recommend bringing binoculars and/or a telephoto camera lens for better views and photos. . On my tour route, those seated on the left (behind the driver) had the window view of the lake and flamingos.
Located in the northern end of the island is a rural road which takes you around Lake Gotomeer which is the home for large groups of flamingos which feel on the brine in the lake. The flamingos are very shy and will fly away if you try walking up to them. It is best to drive slowly around the lake for the best views of the flamingos. During the morning you may be able to see 1000s of the pink birds feeding in the lake. It is a great photo stop.
Always love to look at flamingos. You should go for a quick stop and photo op as you make your way around the island.
We toured Lake Gotomeer to see the indigenous pink flamingoes and got very close up views of the beautiful birds. Our guide explained that the creatures that lives in the salt water lake contribute towards the flamingoes' pink colour. It is a very serene and picturesque place to visit - definitely worthwhile for nature-lovers.
Apparently this used to be a really beautiful lake--until some type of environmental insult related to BOPEC oil fire a few years ago. Apparently slowly coming back, but not back yet. Saw a few Flamingoes
We made a stop on our way around the island. There is a nice picknick place above the lake, but no flamingoes to be seen. We continued along the lake to the old well, it was fun to try equipment here, which was done so you can play with the water :)
Giant lake, you can see from a paved area that is not the park. The park was so so , the paved area next door to the park was better and looked like the park with paved roads
I really wanted to see wildlife on this trip, and I was not disappointed! Flamingos, parakeets, pelicans, osprey, ground doves, and iguanas as far as the eye could see! So different from what I see at home in Edmonton!
Goto was a very peaceful drive and visually an interesting change of scenery. The flamingos were there in large numbers in the fresh water. The observation lookout gives a great view of the lake, its small island and for photos. Make sure you pack something to drink and bring bug spray.
We enjoyed the quiet, natural beauty of the lake. We were the only ones at the lookout and yes we did see flalmingos and enjoyed a closer view as we drove around the lake.
Pretty amazing view, though the lake looks a bit dirty i love it there it feels like im in a paradise. It was amazing.
We visited Lake Gotomeer on our last full day in Bonaire. They had a petrochemical disaster there a while back and we were told the lake is just starting to recover. The scenery was pretty, but the water of the lake was gray and we saw no wildlife near it. We did see the local parakeet and that was nice. It was a nice drive.
We went by bus for a scenic drive along the northern coastline. The clear turquoise waters were breathtaking. The flamingo's were very pretty, but were too far away to really see their beauty. Living in Florida, we have many opportunities to see flamingo's up close and personal. But we did get to see parrots in the wild. We were very fortunate to see these beautiful birds. We also got to see large iguana's sunning themselves. Goats and donkeys are plentiful in Bonaire and a donkey tried to get into our bus! It was too hilarious! The countryside is not lush like some of the other islands, it's more arid. If you are looking for an easy bus ride, this would be an excellent choice. If they promise other views, such as Rincon Village, you will be sorely disappointed.
This lake can not be missed if you travel to Bonaire. The water was an eerie green color making it truly scenic.
