The Donkey Sanctuary is such an amazing place, and I love all that they're doing to protect the donkeys and offer a safe living environment. First stop is the nursery, with Moms & babies - you've got to love the little ones! Make sure you've got plenty of carrots before you head out to the main sanctuary. Your truck will be swarmed by donkeys expecting a treat and I just laughed the entire time we were handing out carrots. We go to visit during every year we're on Bonaire. Priceless!

Very knowledgeable staff that make the visit fun. Get some carrots and feed the donkeys, but you may want to get out of the car first as they will not leave you alone after. The little ones like people, the bigger ones like carrots. Very fun little side trip.

You can drive in and feed the donkeys. It was nice to see people volunteering and caring for the donkeys. Currently the sanctuary has approximately 600 donkeys. I thought it was a nice way to give a contribution towards a worthy cause....

I'll start by saying that if your significant other loves animals AND has little self-control, you almost cannot bring enough carrots (you can also buy them there). Now back to business. This is a very cool concept. Wild donkeys are brought here when they are injured, when they are a "problem" to landowners or otherwise unwanted. The staff really seem to love these animals, and why not? They are friendly and cute, in their own way. There is a "nursery" for young donkeys and their moms that you can enter. Just stay away from the babies so mom doesn't get nervous. The trip around the loop is interesting. The donkeys have been socialized to approach the cars for carrots. They will even walk in front of the car to block your way. You have to just creep along to avoid hurting one. Did I say bring carrots. They will stick their heads all the way into the vehicle to get them. Sadly, we only brought a kilo and they were gone within 10 minutes leaving 90% of the donkeys who inhabit the rest of the loop with no carrots. So, either bring 5 or 10 kilos or break some hearts early and save some for the donkeys down the line. It was lots of fun and a good 1-2 hour diversion.

When in Bonaire, one of the must-see places is the donkey sanctuary. The story of donkeys on the island is a sad one and the donkey sanctuary is determined to turn it into a happy one. You will be very impressed by the energy, enthusiasm, compassion and hard work that go into helping these beautiful animals whose only natural predator is cars. We were in awe of the founder and the young volunteers. It is such a joy to see that there are folks who so deeply care about the nature and the animals. It was a heart-warming experience and it is definitely a must see.

This is our second trip to the Donkey Sanctuary in Bonaire - it's so much fun to drive through and feed the donkeys!! You could buy a bag of carrots for $3 and feed the donkeys as you drive through. They all come to the car and it's a bit overwhelming when they stick their head in the car, but they're pretty gentle and very hungry!! After driving through, you could go into the fenced area where they have the babies and talk to the volunteers...it was a lot of fun and very interesting!

The Donkey sanctuary was founded to rescue wild donkeys on the island that had been injured in car accidents, or colts who lost their mothers to collisions. They now have about 400 (out of a total population of 550) donkeys on site. For a modest contribution, you can drive through the sanctuary and interact with the donkeys. They offer a big bag of carrots -- absolutely take them up on the offer. The donkeys know very well that a vehicle nearby is likely to have carrots aboard -- and you will get lots of love from eager carrot-eaters. Heads poking through car windows, donkeys trotting alongside as you drive (slowly!) through the sanctuary. We happened to visit during their normal hay-feeding time, and laughed loud at donkeys trying to scarf up carrots while they preserved a mouth full of hay. There is a special paddock devoted to new mothers and their colts. The young ones are as cute as pins, and very friendly.Truly, the work that the sanctuary does is heartwarming. They have a plan that should, in time, end the wild donkey population. Considering how much suffering the wild donkeys endure, that is a very worthwhile goal.

Had a ton of fun feeding carrots to hundreds of donkeys. They are very well cared for, and the place is run really well. They also have a bunch of tortoises!

We had a blast with the donkey's....but know if you give them a carrot from your car be prepared for the donkey love fest with as many heads as they can put into your car. They smell the carrots! We would for sure do this again. The people that work there are extremely nice and knowledgeable about the babies, teens and the seniors. Go! so fun.
