This place is a hidden gem! The river cascade from the top of the mountains and connects with the Caribbean Sea at the bottom. The beach is too rough to swim but it's great to surf and sunbathe. Best recommendation: Swim in the natural pools. If you are looking for eco-tourism in the Dominican Republic, Playa San Rafael is the place to go!!! Highly recommend it!!
Many people see the photo of Playa San Rafael when entering the Santo Domingo airport, but little know where this beautiful, tropical paradise is. From the Santo Domingo, head Southwest and about 40 minutes past the City of Barahona, you will see signs for Playa San Rafael. While there, take advantage of breathtaking views, great food and now, the latest addition, eco-tourism recreation. San Rafael Surf School is a new business mounted by youth community leader, Raylin Romero. He offers surfing lessons, board rentas, snorkeling tours, mountain tours and camping options for the adventurer at heart. More importantly, he is trustworthy and safe, so whatever you question may be about the area, you can always count on Raylin as one of the honest good guys. He speaks English too and his prices are very reasonable, especially if you're looking for a break from the outrageous pricing of the larger hotels and resorts.Visit San Rafael, the stop alone will make your trip to the Dominican Republic worth it.
The place is wonderful. You have the river meeting the sea. During its way to the sea, people built some pools the use for refreshing themselves. This was the real story about this place. Of course tourists get curious and now is getting well known by everybody and some small commercial activity are starting. It's still wild as it should be. We had a great time with the Dominican people living there, they cooked for us some fish, and had some beers together. Genuine place and people.
OMG! No words to describe this food.Ask for Diomedes and ask for a CAPITAN Fried Fish!... the best!! my friends asked for more seafood. we all love it all, but hat off for the Captain!!
So if you're in Dominican Republic and decide to make it to Barahona, do visit this place. It's almost a sin not to. It's river and beach are a very interesting place. The smells, colours, nature and life is just amazing. The place is alive and you can feel it!
