This is a must do. You get to see some of the most spectacular organisms on the planet. When you look under the water it looks like you are seeing stars under the water. If possible do it with a glass bottom kayak that will make your experience even better. We did it with the Kayak Rental.
We went to the bio bay out of Fajardo with Island Kayaking. Our guide, Miguel, and his crew did a great job. Even though it was a full moon (which makes the bio plankton less bright) we are glad we went. The kayak trip across the bay is a bit challenging in the dark but if you have any experience at all with kayaks, it should not be a problem. A not-to-be-missed experience!
This was absolutely incredible. As night falls the bay clearly glows when you stir up the water it was an amazing sight to behold. Our group entered the bay early and had a quiet kayak in. However the way out was bumper kayaks as other groups poured through the canal that lead to the lagoon as we were leaving. This was unavoidable but not too difficult to navigate. Our guides also provided us with transparent bottom kayaks which added to the experience. I would highly recommend this trip as it is not one that I will ever forget.
I did not think that this was going to be a great experience based on some reviews from friends. We went to the Biobay with the glass boat which I thought would be interesting for my 10-year-old daughter. We took the 600 which has the light throughout getting into the bay it is dark coming out. Overall the experience was awesome, My wife and daughter loved the bioluminescent bay and had a blast. If you have not been I would strongly suggest you go and take the early experience. Also you have to be in moderate physical shape to kayak through the bay but will have plenty of assistance from the tour guideI had liked this place and would definitely go back when I am back in Puerto Rico
We kayaked with IO into the bio bay through the mangroves at the early session. It was beautiful seeing the iguanas in the trees , and then we paddled around the bay until dark when the water started to look like a mist and then at full darkness everything glowed (when the water was disturbed). While kayaking through th mangroves the water was esp ily bright and you could see fish swimming underneath you which was pretty cool. Apparently it doesn't always light up in the mangroves, but I guess we got lucky. We went on 3/8/15 .. Definitely recommend.
We decided not to take the kayaks out. We took a ride on the electric boat and once again i am so glad we did! I can't imagine kayaking out there! I just hope all of this isn't harming the bay...
I'm all for adventure & physical activity, but those poor kayakers...there were just so many & a lot who didn't know how to paddle...all jamming up...just don't see how they could've had near the experience we did on the boat. We got to run our hands through the water & see the amazing sparkles. It was peaceful, fun to meet the others on the boat, our guides were very knowledgable & entertaining. Booking it was a little nerve-racking, but it all worked out, & I'm so glad!!!
If you're visiting Puerto Rico, make sure you travel to the east side of the island and experience this wonder. It's worthwhile and lots of fun for the whole family. To have a better experience, try to go when the moon is crescent, so you can fully see how bright the bay gets.
We went on the late night session and thought it was super cool. It needs to be very dark to see the effects. Also just fun to kayak out in total darkness! Peaceful on the lagoon area but the wind was wild when we got back to bay to get out. Some had trouble making it! I would hesitate to take kids too young as it would be scary for them and then you would have all the paddling yourself!
no glow....the bay is no longer glowing...supposedly due to the evening lights..I think they just no longer reproducing there....you have to go to other locations...so glad we did not spend money kayaking...you can not swim in the bio bay.
