Very interesting....it was beautiful to experience....swam as well...water was warm...would not bring a camera as it is totally dark outside and you cannot use a flash
I had seen a similar microorganism in the Indian Ocean by Diego Garcia, but Dr. John Hopkins discovered this in 1962 (the microorganism) that makes the water glow like neon. Where the saltwater meets the freshwater, you can swim and every paddle mark glows in the dark...neat place!!!
Came here in September during rainy season. I was told this time of year was hit of miss on how well the water would light up. They also said the best time of year to come to the lagoon would be in the spring. We took a boat tour with Dressel Divers. We saw a little bit of the glistening water, but only from the motor of the boat, but we still decided to jump in. We did get the water to turn blue when we jumped in, but it took a lot of effort churning the water. It was still a really cool sight to see and would definitely come again, but I would want to go on a day where the water would glisten more.
Great trip! Fluffy was a very good guide, nice and funny. Even though it was a full moon (not the best time to observe this phenomenon) it was really worth it! A must!
Anyone who loves to swim will love to see this site ...go on an evening after a sunny day ...worked for me ...to see better . Also ...have them take your pic ...well worth it !
A surreal, magical experience! We brought kids - 17,15,11 and 7 -- and they loved it, and came back to tell their class about it. Even the not-so-sure 7yr old jumped right in after a few minutes of analyzing others swimming around the boat! Didn't notice any fish. The bottom of lagoon is spongy and so weird, like marshmallow fluff, but an experience not to be missed. We did use the tour desk in the hotel as it was last minute and very easy, leaving at 6:30pm and returning at 8:30, but pricey I thought. It is possible to book a taxi or driver to take you there for the 20 min drive, but then they would have to wait, so don't know pricing on that. Once there it is a deck/bar/restaurant called Glistening Waters where the boat departs from, and there are bathrooms you could change swimwear in. I think I saw it was $25 pp to do it that way? The authentic and entertaining captain enhanced the experience! It was magical for all.
This was a surprise excursion for my wife, and I am so glad that I booked it. It is quite far from Ocho Rios (where we stayed) - around an hour's drive either way, but it is totally worth it. I wish the place was better managed - the boats are dingy and rickety, and the small cafe on the entrance could be better but that doesn't take away anything from the magical experience of taking a dip in luminous waters. And since it was a clear night, it seemed like we were sandwiched between stars. We highly recommend that you take a dip.
Kind of freaky when you see the very large fish swimming under the boat creating bio-luminescent trails of light! Hard not to picture big hungry sharks waiting... once we got to a shallow area and were allowed to get out and swim it was fun - I wish I had brought snorkel flippers however as the bottom is mud and slime... not something i really wanted to stick my feet in..... all in all, this was a really incredible experience! Once in a lifetime
Bring water shoes as the floor of the lagoon is like quick sand. Bring a camera as you will want to take a few pictures to show friends. Even tho it was dark out, you will want to jump in the water to experience the luminous waters first hand rather then watching from the boat!!We were told we would be greeted with a rum punch when we booked the tour however we were not! Oh and rumour has it that if you swallow some of the luminous water, your pee will glow for 3 days.....hmmmmm
It was like the northern lights of the water. Is tiring if you go in the water. Some people were huffing and puffing but just as good to stay in the boat!
took the 35-40 minute drive to the luminous lagoon to see what it was .. understood only about 3 of these exist in the world. It was a little ways from Montego bay, but a nice ride thru local areas. Falmouth is a very busy town and the cruise ships are right on top the road almost so you get a good look at them if you go thru that town on your way. the tour of lagoon consists of a ride out on the boat with others a short explanation of the reason the water glows and then if you like you can swim in the glowing water.. it only glows when you "stir" it up, reminds you of the color of a lightening bug in summer in the USA.. we thought it was interesting to swim in in and see it on your body, the top layer glows more and its hard to get a photo of it.a man is there taking photos for a price so if your interested bring a little more cash.. but in the water you can really see it. the water is shallow , maybe 4 feet deep?? and its very "silty" at the bottom, so if you don't like that feeling just float or doggie paddle. all in all an interesting site, might not be for everyone?? Look up the site before you so , see how far of a drive it will be and look for a tour with the best prices..
I really enjoyed watching this magic, it's a combination of fresh water, and a saltwater therefore there's a phosphorus growing called "Dinoflagelite." When you touch the water it really glows in the dark, and if you swim there's even bigger glows in the dark. It's a natural Viagra for male and natural breast enhancement for females if you swim in it, according to the tour guide.
We took the short drive from the Royalton White Sands resort to the Glistening Waters Lagoon one evening with a local tour guide. This is a pretty quick, evening excursion and is not something to be missed! The glowing water was pretty incredible. My only recommendation is to have a camera that can take good images in very low light as it was difficult to capture the affect. You can also bring an empty water bottle with you that you can fill with lagoon water that will glow briefly when shaken for about a day or so.
It was quite murky when we went because of the windy day. Try and go when the winds aren't that high that day.
Our group of 6 adults & 2 kids did a tour of Luminous Lagoon and it was magical. We had fun swimming & splashing to make the water glow. We went on the new moon for the full effect. Definitely worth a visit!
