We are from New Zealand and well used to hut to hut hiking. This was out first experience in Canada and the five day hike was a thoroughly enjoyable one. Evan, our guide, was wonderful, knowledgable and informative as well as being a more than competent cook. Meals were adequate, varied and nutritious, inluding cooked breakfasts - muffins, pancakes and (one day) sausage and eggs. Make your own lunches were well provided for and snacks on return to the hut were plentiful. There was even a surprise at dinner - but I won't spoil the surprise by saying what it is!The scenery was fantastic - every day was a bit different and we enjoyed the difference to our NZ bush. The flowers were not at their best, we were told, but plenty of photos were still taken. The mossies were not around which was a bonus and probably related to the lack of flowers. The pace of the walking was conservative and geared to the slowest in our group of 11. Nevertheless, the more enerfetic were given plenty of scope to move ahead if they desired.Overall a recommended experience, as evident from the other reviews on this site.
Great hiking through extensive flower meadows, alpine with panoramic views. We did the 5 day hut to hut hiking trip and would recommend it highly. The huts are plain but comfortable (hey - they are huts!) the food substantial and tasty and the hiking fantastic.
The two of us did the five day backcountry hike early in August 2014. There were ten in the group , --all except two were in their fifties or sixties. There was a wide range of past backcountry hiking experience in the group. The guides were excellent, and very hardworking ( Georgette was the main guide throughout and Amber guided for the first half of the trip). This was a superb backcountry hiking experience, staying in two huts for two nights each. On the fourth day we had brief contact with two other hikers but otherwise saw no-one. At this time of year the alpine meadows were in full bloom- easily the best and most extensive we have seen in decades of hiking in BC/Alberta//Washington. There were many great views. The refreshing lake swims were very welcome. At times it felt strenuous , but the pace was never fast and there were frequent breaks. There were more mosquitoes than we are used to, but wearing longsleeves and/or using repellent was very effective. The huts were functional, and comfortable enough for a backcountry experience. The food was ample and nutritious. Clearly a high level of fitness is not required, although it would help. If you're moderately active and can be determined when needed, consider this hike: it's a tremendous opportunity.
We had a absolute great time during our 3 day hiking trip with our guide EVAN! Thank you Evan! We enjoyed the quiet time in the nature! We hiked the BATTLE MOUNTAIN on our second day. There are no visible hiking trails and no other people, so you really need a guide to find your way to the top - and from there you have an awesome view - it doesn´t matter in which direction you look, everywhere are mountains, lakes and trees - spectacular! We also enjoyed our time in the chalet, Evan was not only our guide but also an excellent cook!
My husband and I and 8 friends just returned from the 7 day hut-to-hut hiking with Wells Grey Adventures. We booked almost a year in advance and this 85 km hike became our goal for training, since my husband has had 2 hip replacements. It was definitely challenging in places but our guides were great and kept the pace moderate. The huts were a welcome sight at the end of the day and the meals were organized well, tasty and nutritious...even snacks and desserts! Each morning we made our lunch for the day hikes (every second day) which was great because we carried only the essentials, being able to leave the rest on our bunks. The scenery was stunning! Literally rainbows and wildflowers, vistas and mountain peaks. A list of what to bring on their website was helpful and knowing that there was the option of a rest day in between the trek between huts was a comfort if a knee was hurting or some alone time required. We had one guide for 4 days and then a trade for another for the last days. Both of these young women were remarkable: competent, knowledgeable and amazingly energetic and strong! Many thanks to them for being great companions and helping the trek go so smoothly.
My husband just got home from a 7-day backcountry hike with Wells Gray Adventures and he can't stop talking about how wonderful it was. I will just hit the highlights in this review. The company uses three backcountry chalets in Wells Gray park as destinations for the week - one day of hiking followed by one day of exploring the mountain wilderness nearby the chalet. The guide was terrific, and a great naturalist and cook as well. My husband took very little in his pack because the chalets are so well equipped. The wildflowers and lakes look fabulous from his photos. The guide was also very good at establishing camaraderie amongst all the clients, who were from all sorts of varied backgrounds. A couple from Europe had difficulty with the trail, they had never been in rugged Canadian wilderness before, and the guide made sure they had as easy a time as possible and arranged for them to leave (escorted) early, on day 5. They were very pleased with their overall experience in spite of the challenges. We have been to Wells Gray Park many times (we live in Vernon) but always on our own, doing day hikes and car camping. My husband's excellent experience has me thinking about joining him in doing a Wells Gray Adventure next summer, maybe a hiking/canoeing trip would work for this senior.
