Whilst we were disappointed that the regular collection was in storage or on display in the corridors of the hospital we were privileged to catch up with George Gittoes "I Witness" travelling exhibition as well as a couple of others smaller exhibitions. While Gittoes' confronting images were a complete contrast to the peacefulness of this beautiful country city, it was good to be reminded that the peace we take for granted in our country is far from the norm in our world. This small gallery should be on everyone's (including TripAdvisor's) list of things to do!!
Enjoyed the visit. Three matching exhibitions of quality . Particularly enjoyed Wicked Women and Journeys West, the group exhibition.
Another surprising regional gallery. No "BIG" names on display at the moment, but a fascinating series of paintings of "Femmes Fatales" by Rosemary Valadon, with high profile female figures( Essie Davis, Mary Cuneen etc) painted as per pulp fiction covers from the 1940's/50's. Excellent. Also a selection of paintings by a wide range of artists called "Roads West"- different impressions of the Central West . Also varied and excellent. Well worth a visit if you are in the area. Always amazing to visit regional galleries- always seem to exceed expectations.
This Art Gallery, purpose built for best hanging results, was an eye-opener. The current major Exhibition on the ground floor was able to showcase a private collection in the best manner. All the works were of the big name Australian artists, worthy of an individual presence. It was explained all the "walls" were changeable to make intimate areas for best results. Upstairs was a Botanical Art Exhibition - again well displayed. I commend this Gallery to all.
The walls looked like school kids painting drawings hung around. I'd rather go and sit in the library for an hour or so.
With an ever changing display in each of the 3 galleries anyone who visits will find something to wile away an hour, be sure to check out the fantastic gift lines inside the gallery, hand made items at very reasonable prices, much better than some tacky $2 souvenir.
Frankly, we were surprised - Orange is punching well above its weight with this very interesting and well organised gallery. When we visited there was a photography exhibition on in the larger downstairs gallery, which had both adults and children enthralled. In addition the small permanent exhibition upstairs is exceedingly good. Not being from Australia I can't say I had heard of any of the artists, but the variety of modern art across the last century or so was very interesting and many of the pieces seemed - to us at least - to be of the quality you would expect in a much larger gallery. All in all, we would definitely recommend a visit.(You can also kill an hour or so in the nearby library if you need something to do with the kids on a rainy day - it has a nice children's reading section and, like the gallery, was much better than we would have expected for a relatively small town).
A fantastic space and brilliant permanant exhibiton made this gallery a top visit. A Great mix of modern and contemporary art as well as some quite daring pieces that most galleries wouldnt have the guts to show. Worth a trip to Orange just for this alone!!
This is a most delightful gallery. It had an excellent permanent collection, and a very well curated travelling exhibition, when we visited. We almost didn't go there, and hadn't been that impressed with Orange, prior to that point. However, our visit to this gallery more than made up for everything else. This is a must for art lovers.
Large, modern, spacious and current. From artworks made with glow paint and lego to a collection to commemorate the Queen's jubilee this gallery has something for everyone and better still most of it was local. A great range of exhibits under one roof.
