We did not arrange anything in advance but walked along the pier and found a boat at the marina going to Isla de Lobos - a nature preserve with hundred (maybe thousands) of sea lions playfully diving, sunbathing and swimming by your boat. It is a little rough seas - although our day was beautiful. For us there was no commentary but we paid 60 USD per person for the two hour tour. There was no swimming involved but we enjoyed it!

This place is unique, one of the largest sea lion colonies in the world. We hired the Samoa boat with a small private group of 11 for US$400. They provide floating vests which are very difficult to put on, and they were not happy with us requesting them to have them on the kids before leaving. Do have a motion sickness pill before leaving, specially if the sea is choppy. Negotiate beforehand that the boat circumnavigates the island (or else you will only sea one part of it) and that they stop there for one hour, not the standard 15'. Also ask them for a sailor/guide that explains what you are seeing. Boat captain reeked of alcohol. It was a great experience regardless, we got to float off the island and some sea lions approached us and swam by us.

You can see the sea wolves very close taking a tour on a boat. The smell is not amazing but you forget when you see all those sea wolves and the beautiful island where they live just smaller than the sea wolf population at Cape Town. I loved it!!!

We thought $50 U.S. per person was plenty but in hindsight was worth it!It's only about 8km off shore and the excursion is approx. 2 hrs. There are thousands of seals & sea lions, but I wouldn't really be happy swimming with them..................sharks love them! However, you can only be guided by the tour operatorsWe went on Samo and it seemed very stable and comfortable.Leaving from the Marina right in town it's a great day finishing off with lunch at one of the nice little cafes/ restaurants at the marina.........IF they are open. The marina is a pleasant place to hang out even if you take a lunch box with you.

It's a must to take the boat out to the island and to swim with the sea lions and seals. This was a high point of the visit to Punta.

A great boat trip to see the sea lions. They were sun bathing and playing in the water is groups. Wish we could have stayed longer to observe them.

What a nice trip , going over to the Island was an adventure &ifyou get sea sick think twice but the views on the way out are great , but the island itself is something else. When you arrive at the Island the amount of Seals& Sealions on it & in the seaare unreal ,must have been 1000s & the boat gets up close with out getting in their way , a fun dayout.

It was the BEST of Punta for us!It's not cheap to go, we paid around US$80 per person, but it was worth it!The staff tells you about the characteristics of marine lions and wolves, the differences between them, everything. They are amazing! There's a HUGE population in the island, around 200,000 animals. They smell a little bit bad, some people get sick from the moviment of the boat with that smell, but it's not a big deal.

It was great! The trip took around two hours, we stayed at the island for about 15 minutes, some people were swimming next to the sea lions. It was very smelly, but it was worth it - to see so many animals in one place!

Our tour agency( dimar tour) was just a water bus and expensive. The boat was nice, but the captain didn't even introduced himself or any information about the island nor the sea lions. They didn't provide a life vest for the kids on board, which I think should be standard. The nice part about it was seeing the sea lions, and that you could swim with them. But the captain was really pushy about getting back. Boat ride = 45 mins one way, seeing/swimming with the sea lions 15 mins.

A protected place, home to thousands of sea lions and only a short boat ride out of Punta del Este in the Atlantic Ocean. Worth going to visit, there are also some dives leaving from Punta del Este during the Season. Beware that diving with sea lions here is like diving in veggie soup (well, depending on ocean conditions), but the animals are absolutely everywhere. They are not dangerous at all, just curious and they swim all around you and nibble at your fins, specially the little ones. Because it is a protected area, tours taking you there only navigate the coast, you are not allowed to land in the island. There are no downsides to this trip, but if I must list some, I would list that the ocean can be quite choppy and if you are prone to seasickness you might want to think it twice....also the noise the animals make is loud and constant of course and never ends....and the smell of these animals and their waste can be tremendous if you are in direction against the wind coming from the island....turn the other way!

We went there during a recent "Around Cape Horn" Celebrity Infinity cruise. It was not cheap(USD50 for an adult, USD30 for a child), but it was definitely worth doing. The boats areright there at the pier, the whole trip was about 2 hours. Lots and lots of sea lions and sea wolves, one does not land on the island, but we got very close. The boat can get rather rocky, but it was fun.

With a small group we hired a boat from the pier and went to the Island. The sight and smell of so many Sea Lions was brilliant.

Head down to the port to buy tickets at USD50 per person. The Isla del Lobos ferry I boarded left at noon. There are several departures a day. Bring your bathing suit as you'll get a chance to swim with the sea lions.Note: If you're headed to the Beagle Channel or Puerto Madryn in Argentina, skip Uruguay's sea lions and go with Argentina's instead. Is cheaper and you see more sea lions.
