The market in Guamote is a must hit in the area. A couple hours from Riobamba, the drive provides great scenery to the destination. Guamote is a small, bustling town and until the early 2000s, still bartered item-for-item at the market. Highly recommended visit if you're in the area and want to see a bit of the "un-seen" of Ecuador. I haven't seen many gringos at this market, so the vendors might hike prices on you. Always haggle down at least 20% unless you feel it's a good deal as is.
This is a double listing on Tripadvisor. Guamote is a lovely sleepy town which is midway between Riobamba and Alausi. I visited on a Sunday and there were a number of market stalls active. The place sees very few tourists, so take care not to be too intrusive with taking photos. Many children are happy to pose for photos, adults less so but they will wave. All the usual colourful Poncho and bags are for sale. The shoe shine kids can get a bit annoying.
