I like this museum very much. It's new, the exhibition is reach (pottery, jewelery, statues... ), the museum is air conditioned and on the entrance you are welcomed by the Great Kouros. I personally enjoyed this museum more that the big one in Kavala.
Archaeology is all over thassos, by the beaches and hotels. You stumble across it when out walking my husband loved it, its amazing just doted around.
We had a rainy day when in Thassos Town on holiday and thank goodness we did or we may not have visited the museum. What an incredible place - first to be greeted by the Colossus in the entrance and then all the amazing artifacts and historical detail of the ancient past on Thassos. Quite spellbinding and then meant the next day was spent exploring more parts of the town with our new found knowledge. We are total beach folks - but this was ace!
there are plenty of historical items on show, the museum is air conditioned, which is a nice welcome from the heat outside. the museum is light and airy plenty of room for everyone. make sure you have a tee shirt with you otherwise you will not be allowed in. I found the museum very interesting and educating.
From the outside it doesn't look very special, however, once inside it turns into a modern, well thought out space with interesting wall murals of old photos and the exhibits displayed to their best advantage. I won't wait for a rainy day to visit it again, well worth the 2 Euro's entrance fee.
Thassos is an amazing town in an amazing ishland with clear beaches and very polite people, very cheap hotels and cheap food, you can walk or you can drive to see this large trees and buy all the good sweets the people there shell.
On the outside the building looks not so big but after entering the museum put the account that is still large. I found that it was recently renovated and reorganized so far looks great. As in most museums of archaeology and here there are many objects that recall the old glorious history of this island. I thought that it was interesting and worth a visit of antiquity lovers but also good for simple tourists. The ruins of the ancient agora are near the museum.Entry fee is minimal. But do not forget to visit the other numerous archaeological sites in Limenas or Alyki.
An excellent small museum, with very interesting exhibits, beautifully presented in a light and airy building, with just enough information, and helpful staff.
We like to have a look in local museums when in Greece and this one did not disappoint. On a smaller island you would expect a smallish one with few exhibits. Not so. In a building that looks small from the outside, it opens up into one of the best we have visited. The number of items and quality are both quite stunning. Very well laid out and 2 Euros entrance make it a must if visiting Thassos.
We were really impressed with this! From the outside one has no idea of the extent and information to be found inside, almost too much to absorb in one visit.
Fascinating artefacts: pottery, jewellery, statues and excavations. Only cost two euros. Nice and cool inside on a hot day!
Nothing to dislike, a wonderful history of the area with brilliant exhibits. A great complement to all the ruins around the town..
Liked the amount of Information available. Could do with a few more seats for those of us with old legs, though! and better signposting to get us around the museum in a logical order might have been good too.
only 2 euros entry clean and smart but not much inside,i presume thasos hasn't had to much going on archeologically speaking
The museum hs a wonderful new extension that allows for wonderful local ancient artifacts to be displayed and enjoyed . fantastic place to see the Islands history (exhibits now have information in English as well as Greek and French) all for just 2 euros
