Overseeing the city, the high town has a lot to offer. The views, the nightlife, numerous shops. Sure, requires some walking, but You can have a cable car take you up. A must in Bergamo area!
This city is so charming! The duomo is magnificent, the piazzasare delightful and the streets are lovely to stroll. There are several bakeries and restaurants to enjoy!
The old town is like stepping back into a medieval city state. On every side are interesting buildings. The Duomo is especially nice with the adjacent octaganol baptistery .Santa Maria Maggiore is also beautiful with its striking Romanesque architecture. There are lots of charming bars and restaurants.
We spent there one afternoon and Evening. We took the cablecar to get there and it was a great experience. Being up there felt like going back in time. We bought some bags and coats and enjoyed a tremendous dinner. I would revisit any time.
Wonderful place near the Prealps and not far away from Milan around 50 km. this town is rounded by venician walls and is very easy to get from the airport and from the north of italy.
It should be visited at least once in life. There are beautiful sights and a lot of places where sit quiet and drink or eat something good
I have been living in Bergamo since my birth, so, maybe, my point of view is a little biased.I traveled in a lot of different countries, but I must confess that what we have here, the Old Upper Town, is almost unique. It is its extension, its conservation state, its charm that makes it unique. In old Europe, but also here in Italy, you can find cities that are similar to the Old Upper Town, but they are just that: similar.I am not saying it is the most beautiful thing in the world, I am only saying that it is beautiful indeed and a must see for every tourist.I think it should be more advertised because it is a pity not seeing it!In the Old Upper Town you can find museums (just do not expect big ones), historical buildings and charming restaurants. You can spend a whole day walking through the city, going into the hills, climbing to the San Vigilio area (upper than the Upper Town). To access the Old Upper Town you can find one of the numerous stairs that guide you to the top, or you can take a bus from the center of the modern Bergamo, or you can take the cable-railway, or you can go by car when car access is allowed (it is not easy to find a parking place once you are in the upper area). If you can, I suggest to find a random stair and follow its route!Anyway, it is a real hidden jewel and I hope that it will become less hidden.
We took the funicular to the top and the view is great over Citta Bassa but there is very little to do up there unless you want to sit and eat.
Although this was my first trip to Italy and only seen Milan and Bergamo I can definitely write that this was the most scenic, romantic and beautiful old town I have been to in Europe! You can see it on foot in less the a day but the place has so many great restaurants, sights to see I would definitely recommend Bergamo and its old town for a weekend romantic getaway! We came here for Valentines and it met our expectations, although a bit cold and rainy we had great time! The panoramic views are great and you can walk there from the train station with a small ride in the Funicolare (uphill tram) or take the 1A bus. Also you can go even higher with a second uphill tram and have great views of the mountains and towns across.Next visit in the summer!
It is old medieval and beautiful. Nice for the panoramic view of the city, you can find a lot of nice restaurants, excellent for a walk.
Walking from the central station after the bus, which brought us from the airport, had dropped us at the main station. You already see it: a fortification in the horizon. You just have to go there. You won't be disappointed by the ancient gothique style and the high amount of churches. Furthermore there are a lot of possibilities to spend your money in the fashion boutiques.
In my two visits to Italy, this is by far my most favorite place to visit. It's like stepping back in time, quaint, beautiful and full of history, as well as great restaurants and cafes.
once in Bergamo you just need to visit La Citta' Alta. You can either walk up or take a tram. Lovely old architecture and lovely views.
This historical area in Bergamo is a nice place to wander a little bit and get the taste of Italian way of living. Although the weather was nasty, we spent really nice moments exploring this place. We walked from place to place, we climbed to the highest point where the views were amazing.
