This is a beautiful simple church that is right on the main square of Koper. The outside is simple Venetian white marble with a large oval window above the entrance. Inside is dramatic with large carved marble columns and the use of guilt to create a golden hue around the altar. The original bell tower is now owned by the town and has become a separate attraction for a small fee. We found this church delightful
Came to Koper recently by cruise ship and found it a very pretty place. The first part of the day we did a hop on hop off bus trip to the nearby towns of Piran, Portoroz and Izola which were all very interesting and enjoyable , it is well worth doing that to get a good look at the area. The latter part of the day we walked around the old town of Koper which is only a few minutes from the dock. Enchanting to walk the alleyways, shops and eating places and find yourself in the ancient Tito Square. There you can admire the architechure of the old Palace and marvell at the Koper Cathedral and Bell Tower and if your feeling fit go to the top I'm sure you will find it worthwhile. View the bay and as we did enjoy the sight of all the sailing boats.Nice part of Slovenia to visit if you can.
In the square of old Koper a lot of history and shops and cafes to check out. In this old city you can walk around the little alley ways with little shops and restaurants.
Make your way directly to Tito Square. From Tito square walk west down the numerous alley ways and stop off in the many coffee shops and bars. Great restaurants can be found near by as well. From Tito Square you are a short walk to anything, and everything, in old Koper.
Beautiful little village with lots to see ... climbing the 204 steps up the Bell Tower is worth every step. From the Praetorian Palace, the open markets, to sitting in one of the small cafes in Tito Square with a glass (or two) of red wine ... Koper is well worth the visit. If travelling be car, less than an hour south of Trieste (huge the coastline for the best views and to avoid the toll roads), Great little village!
The cathedral and bell tower is dedicated to the Assumption of Mary and dominates the main square. It was built in the 12th century. The Romanesque style is still evident on the south side. The rest extending to the bell tower was Gothicized in 1392. The Renaissance elements were constructed in 1488 including the portals. In the bell tower hangs one of the oldest bells in Slovenia(1333) The interior has quality paintings of artists from Venice. It's most famous work by the altar is the Sacra Conversatione by Carpaccio from 1516. It's considered one of the finest Renaissance painting in Slovenia. The church and other buildings in the old town are in need of repair and restoration.
Climbing the bell tower for just 1 euro is a must. Fantastic views of the coastline slovenian coastline- great opportunity for photos.
It is like going back to good old seaside city square somewhere 100 years back but it is much more than that ... Koper keeps its charm on that main market with some beautiful specialities. Next to the famous cathedral that looks over the Slovenian's port, there is also Praetorian Palace which will leave you breathless at daytime or at night when the moon slowly helps creating an amazing screen for a romantic walk of two. But most certainly you have to stop for a cup of caffe and a piece of cake at Loggia to round your trip. No worries, you shall fall in love with this town, our little pearl as I like to call it:)
If you visit the town of Koper this is a must see! It is situated in the central beautifull and old square of Koper and to climb your way you have to pay like 2 eur. Seing Koper from the bell tower it is a wonderfull experience. Just take care that you don't get cought when the bell rings.
Well maintained tower with it cobbled stone streets, cafe's and Loggia in the middle of town inviting you to sit and have an espresso before making your way back through more cobbled stone streets with shops.
It's only €2 to climb this ancient tower and it gives you panoramic views of the whole town. It was great to look "down" on our cruise ship. Warning...do not get caught in the inside of the tower the bells ring or you will defended for life....really... It's excruciating loud!
The cathedral and the bell tower are not impresive, but they look nice and well-preserved. They are in the main square of Koper. Nice place to take a coulple of pictures. You can find there some musicians that provide a charming environment.
As I recall the fee was around 3euro, while climbing the stairs you can see historical pictures of Koper when it was still an island. At the top there is a nice view of the city, but be prepared for the bell, it goes of every 15min and its quite loud :) worth seeing.
Great city for tourism and sightseeing, a lot of things to do in this Slovenian largest coastal town. Great food and great people a must visit if you are in the area.
Stopped in Koper as part of our cruise itinerary (Istanbul - Venice), was the only place we (all 4) were a bit disappointed with and felt the cruise line should look at stopping somewhere more interesting in future, possibly Trieste. Admittedly it was a overcast day when we visited, not the best weather to see any town, in it's best light.
