cherokee county history museum and visitors center

We stopped by to pick up some information about the area and were greeted by a wonderful gentleman who offered us all sorts of useful information about the history of the area and things to do for the day. The museum is quite modest but well worth a quick stop if for nothing more than meeting a nice person.

The museum is small but the featured exibit is always changing. Worth the visit. The staff is very friendly. I Have learned a lot about Cherokee County visiting here.

Anyone who complains about this museum is a Scrooge. It's free, people! Yes, it's small, but the lady who works there has the zeal of a missionary. There wasn't anything I could ask her about Canton that she either didn't know or find out. Lots of local color. I am in Canton every other week because my son participates in the local Young Marines unit, and the trip is too far to go back home. I invariably revisit the museum while here, and have brought many friends to see it as well. The exhibits are small, but lovingly done. If you want big and fancy (not to mention pricey), go to Atlanta. This is charming, small-town pride. The building alone (a 1920s marble courthouse with a really cool no-longer-used jail) is worth the visit. Unless you're jaded and hard to please. Then you should just stay home and complain about stuff. Right now (a Saturday morning), I'm sitting right outside the museum enjoying live music, an outdoor market, and lots of friendly people. I might not travel cross country to see this modest museum, but if you're in the area, you should stop by. Make it on a Saturday morning!

The staff here is great. They answered all our questions without hesitation. We asked about some old road beds we know of which are no active and have trees growing on them which we discovered during some hikes. The staffers started pulling out old maps of the area and were able to identify them. They look up some history of the area and were able to tell us why the roads were originally there and no longer used. Turns out most of them went to old mills and gold mines.The displays were well laid out with plenty of information about each exhibit. The whole building was clean and well maintained.

This is a one room visitors center and history museum. There is not much to it, but it is free and the girl working there was great. She was helpful and friendly. We were glad we stopped.

Well, I have been to many, many museums, and I can honestly say this is the bottom of the barrel. I don't even know why it exists. It consists of a few old artifacts and lots of pictures. My wife and I went through it in about 20 minutes.

There are only 2 small rooms here but we enjoyed what was displayed in there. They have a lot of history in cases & on the walls, interesting to find out more about Canton and Cherokee Co. Loved the rock samples and photos of the old mills and mining. Plus, it's free unless you want to give a donation. Worth the trip some rainy afternoon!

Just a self guided walk through an old smelly building. No information, no guides, the only good part is a sweet lady in a basement office that will tell you about 4H, & gardening!

I was born in Canton, Georgia. It was a small town and the economy for many years was driven by two cotton mills. But there was also a side industry that flourished. It was the making of Moonshine. One of my favorite stories was about a moonshine driver that was hauling barrells of shine to south Georgia. It was late at night and he could see lights coming up fast behind him. He drove faster and faster and yet the lights were still there shining in his rearview mirror. He was scared to death and slowed the car but the lights were still there. He slowed to a stop and realized noone was behind him. The Full moon had been shining down on the barrell tops in the back and had been reflected on his mirror. Needless to say the Shine was delivered. Now - in Canton for a few more weeks you can see a MoonShine Still and use the monitors and boards to read about Moonshine in the Mountains.at the Cherokee County Museum on North Street across from Main Street. You will also be able to climb the steps to the Old Canton Jail House on the Third floor of the Courthouse. We rode the elevator up but if the ancient elevator had stopped - well that would be a story I wouldn't live to tell. After vising our Museum, stroll across the street to the R&M Hoagie Shoppe at 117 Main Street, Canton, Georgia. Try a steak and cheese or a Donna's Special (Best Rueban ever) or a Hot Cheese or Cold Corn Beef. And the list goes on and on. Lou and Helen Deluca opened their shop in 1972. Lou Deluca was the nicest guy and I was one of the first people in Canton to meet him. I thought he must be crazy to open a Hoagie Shop in Canton. I did not even know what a Hoagie was! But he made it work and now the 2nd and 3rd generations of Deluca's are still making mouth watering sandwiches. If you stay till the evening you have two great choices and maybe three. Goin Coastal is a phenomenal SeaFood Restaurant that has recently expanded. They are close to the Hoagie Shop. One block down and round the Corner on Marietta Street is the Downtown Kitchen with a unique menu. Also on Main Street just before Yawn's Book Store is the Fork n Tavern. I haven't eaten there since the new owners moved in but I am hearing good things. Try out Yawn's Book store for some special local authors. My personal favorites are author Margie Carroll's children books. Margie has a camera and she spends countless hours and days capturing animals in daily life. Margie then creates stories about the animals around her photographs. I love the Polar Bear story the best but the pictures are not hers. My favorite of hers is of the family of Foxes that she captured at the historic auhor Cora Harris' Home near Pine Log, Georgia. Be sure to check them out. If you are a Georgia Football lover, you will want Jack Weaver's Uga Book. for your children. There are books for grownups too! So that is just a little bit about Canton, Georgia - where Metro meets the Mountains. Y'all Come!

A really big little Museum. Extremly well run, exibits really give you a feeling for the abundant local history. So many little known things to learn about an area with a rich historic herritage.

My son and I stopped here last weekend... We had wanted to go for a while... Although the museum itself is small... It is free and it is very informative!!! The setting is the old Marble Court House in downtown Canton... They had many books about Canton on display and for sale, We bought the William "Buddy" Alexander one and it did not disapoint at all... Well after we toured the Museum we asked about the old Jail upstairs... The lady and gentleman told us right were to go to tour that section on our own... We had alot of fun going through the different cells and such... It was a fun afternoon outing! I would recommend to others!
