Cochise Lake wetland is part of the wastewater management system for the town of Willcox. It is located on the north side of the large Willcox Playa that attracts thousands of migrating birds (most notably, sandhill cranes) each winter. To reach the lake, take I-10 exit 340 at Willcox and follow route 186 south through town. After you pass downtown and the BBQ restaurant that is built in a train car, start watching for Rex Allen Jr Drive on the right. This is an industrial area. There is a sign for the Twin Lakes Golf Course at the intersection. Turn right and follow Rex Allen Jr Drive past the golf course to its end. You will be able to see the lake ahead. There is a dirt/sand loop road encircling the lake that is suitable for passenger cars (use caution in wet conditions). I have been to the lake twice; once in early December and once at the end of February. I have not seen any sandhill cranes roosting at the lake but did see a few fly over. There were many other birds in the area, particularly waterfowl. There are several viewing blinds with magnifying scopes available, but no other services. I didn't notice a restroom but there could be a portable toilet. There is no shade here so go prepared for sun exposure. Check with Willcox Chamber of Commerce for more information: 800-200-2272.
